First Round High Five
All games Friday at 7 p.m. unless noted
Game of the Week
(12) Grossmont (5-5) vs (5) Bonita Vista (7-3) at Southwestern College (Division II)
Last year, Bonita Vista had a rough second half of the season, capped by an upset loss to Grossmont. Are the Barons in a better place this season as they look to exact some revenge? With their three losses coming against opposition with a combined 23-5-2 record, it’s hard to argue otherwise. Grossmont comes in winners of three straight, and the Foothillers have scored and surrendered an identical 207 points. Another oddity in this one – Bonita Vista has pitched five shutouts and been shutout themselves twice. Winner of this one takes a trip to North County to face Mission Hills on Nov. 27.
Best of the Rest
(11) Hoover (6-4) at (6) Mount Miguel (7-2-1) (Division III)
Both teams in this first round matchup come in heading in different directions. The host Matadors have three wins and one tie in their last four, while the Cardinals finished the regular season 1-4 after an undefeated start. It won’t get any easier for Hoover, facing off against a Mt. Miguel team that has not lost in five home games this season. Hoover hasn’t won a playoff game since 2006 and Mount Miguel hasn’t since 2007. Who can end their drought?
(9) Escondido Charter (8-2) at (8) Coronado (6-4) (Division IV)
Coronado’s comeback win last week means they get to stay on the island for another week by hosting a playoff game. Dual threat quarterback Kodie Englehart and the Islanders welcome a Calvin Christian team that has to be playing with a chip on their shoulder after finishing 8-2 and having to travel for their first round game. In their four years of varsity football, the White Tigers have only made the playoffs once, and haven’t won a playoff game. Both teams come in with four-game winning streaks.
(9) Calipatria (6-4) at (8) Calvin Christian (7-3) (Division V)
Calvin Christian has not lost since September, bouncing back nicely from an 0-3 start. It won’t be easy making it eight wins in a row when Caliparia comes calling. If common opponents are any indication, this one should be pretty even. Both the Crusaders and Hornets have losses to La Jolla County Day, Escondido Charter and Tri-City Christian. Winner of this game gets defending Division V champion Francis Parker in the quarterfinals.
(11) Carlsbad (3-7) at (6) Mira Mesa (6-4) (Division I)
For a No. 6 seed, Mira Mesa has one of the most impressive resumes in the section – with losses coming to Vista, Helix, Oceanside, and Cathedral Catholic – and could be a sleeper in Division I. But first thing’s first: the Marauders have to get out of the first round. Last year, Mira Mesa fell at home to Fallbrook in the first round to bring a disappointing end to their season and the Marauders have lost their last four playoff games against North County competition. Can the road warrior Lancers make it five?
