Lancers win big game on emotional afternoon
In a matchup between two of the best small schools in the section, Francis Parker used a big third quarter to topple previously undefeated Santa Fe Christian 31-20. With the win, the Lancers have the inside track to the state bowl bid.
“We sure do, but we can’t take any games lightly from here on out,” said Francis Parker quarterback Deon Randall. “We know what we have to do to go to state. We’re happy that we clinched this win.”
Santa Fe Christian came into the game with heavy hearts. On Oct. 25, Eagles junior receiver and lineman Will Wardrip died in a car accident.
“It’s been a hard week,” said Santa Fe Christian head coach Nick Ruscetta. “It was just such a full weeks of things in remembrance of Will.”
On Friday, the Santa Fe Christian community held the memorial, burial and vigil for Wardrip. Ruscetta said Friday was the toughest day of the week.
“Our schedule has been almost too much,” Ruscetta said. “There have been points where I didn’t know if these kids could get through all that we’re asking them to do.”
Both defenses came out strong in an even first half. Francis Parker (7-1, 3-0 Coastal) opened the scoring with a Kenny Brookins two-yard touchdown run late in the first quarter. Midway through the second quarter, Santa Fe Christian running back Sam Hoekstra tied things up with a two-yard touchdown and the teams went into the half tied 7-7.
“I thought the first half was as hard as we could play,” Ruscetta said.
After halftime, the Lancers raced out to a huge lead with three touchdowns in five minutes. The first of those scores came on the opening kickoff, which Roland Jackson returned untouched for a score. That return followed by a Randall rushing touchdown and Brian Levett 12-yard fumble return gave Francis Parker complete control of the game.
“We knew that we had to put the pedal down,” Randall said. “Our defense stepped up huge. They got out of sync a little bit and our defense got it going.”
Santa Fe Christian (7-1, 1-1) scored a touchdown before the end of the third to make it a two-score game. But the Eagles wouldn’t get closer than 11 in the final quarter despite starting a pair of drives in Lancers territory.
“It was a good game for the team because we’re still kind of young,” Randall said. “We all maintained our composure and we didn’t let the big plays decompose us.”
After the game, Wardrip’s father Nick addressed the team. The team wore patches that had “WW32” on them and Santa Fe Christian supporters wore T-shirts in remembrance of Wardrip.
“Will was the epitome of a dearly loved kid. He was always smiling, always upbeat,” Ruscetta said. “He had a smile that tore you up.”
Ruscetta said Francis Parker was very supportive of Santa Fe Christian in the week leading up to the game. Members of the Lancers’ team made a card and put “32” on their wristbands to commemorate Wardrip.
Francis Parker plays a non-conference game at San Diego Friday. Santa Fe Christian will look to get back on track Saturday afternoon at Horizon (2-6, 0-3).
