Small Schools State Bowl
Francis Parker (11-2) vs. Modesto Christian (14-0) Friday 4 p.m. at Home Depot Center
After narrowly missing out on the state bowls last season, Francis Parker will get the chance to prove they belong in this year’s Small School Bowl. Francis Parker’s opponent is Modesto Christian, who finished the season undefeated after winning the Trans Valley League and the Sac-Joaquin Section Division IV title. This game will be a matchup of two of the best all-purpose stars in the state, Francis Parker’s Deon Randall and Modesto Christian’s Isaiah Burse. Francis Parker is led by two-way star Deon Randall, a dual-threat quarterback averages 131 yards rushing and 106 yards passing per game. Randall lines up at safety on defense and also had a punt return for a touchdown against Bishop’s in the Division V title game. Similar to Randall, Burse nearly does it all for Modesto Christian. On offense, the senior quarterback has thrown for 1,676 yards and 24 TDs this season while rushing for 1,691 yards and 25 TDs. And on the other side of the ball, Burse is third on the team in tackles and has seven sacks and five interceptions.
The Lancers’ only losses this season were a forfeit loss to Hoover on Sept. 4 and a 15-point loss to Dillon Baxter and undefeated Mission Bay on Sept. 18. Along the way, Francis Parker has proven it deserves the South bid by beating the likes of Santa Fe Christian and Orange County power St. Margaret’s. Excluding the forfeit, the Lancers have outscored their opponents by an average of 22.6 points per game and racked up 513 points. Meanwhile the Crusaders have dominated most of their competition this season, rolling up 49.4 points per game while holding their opponents to less than 16 a game Modesto Christian has put up 60 or more points four times this season, including a 61-40 win over one-loss Placer in the section finals. When Francis Parker is on offense, running back Kenny Brookins (1,058 yards, 18 TDs) provides a nice change of pace on the ground and when the Lancers throw, count on deep balls to Roland Jackson and Warren Brody. Defensively, the Lancers’ playmakers are Randall, corner Dalante Dunklin (39 solo tackles, 8 fumble recoveries) and linebacker Enrique Espinosa-DaSilva. By opting not to move Modesto Christian up to the Division III game, the commissioners hoped to avoid a lopsided game like last year’s – and this should be anything but that. Expect a high-scoring shootout that comes down to the final minutes.
