Division I State Bowl preview

Division I State Bowl

Oceanside (13-0) vs. Bellarmine Prep (San Jose) (11-1-1) Friday 8 p.m. at Home Depot Center

For the second time in three years, Oceanside is making an appearance in the state bowls – but this time they are playing in the Division I bowl. In 2007, the Pirates defeated Novato 28-14 in the Division II game. Their opponent this time around is Bellarmine Prep, co-champions of the West Catholic League and champions Central Coast Section Open Division. Despite having a loss and tie on their record, those results came to teams that have a combined record of 20-2-1. This one will be a battle of contrasting styles – the passing attack of Oceanside against the ground game of Bellarmine.

Pirates quarterback Quentis Clark has thrown for 2,166 yards and 22 TDs and has an offense loaded with speed, with the likes of receivers Jerry Whittaker and King Holder, and backs Rene Siluano and Jake Fely. The Bells average 32.7 points per game and 263.9 yards per game on the ground, led by running back Kyle Olugbode (1,746 yards, 23 TDs) and quarterback Mike McGovern (864, 17). Can Bellarmine establish the run against Oceanside? It won’t be easy against a defensive allowing 7.5 points per game that forced six Helix turnovers in the Division II finals. Both teams come into the game as the top team in their respective sections, with Oceanside having an edge in talent with five Division I players on its roster. The Pirates are putting a 38-game winning streak on the line against Bellarmine, who has a record of 33-4-1 the past three seasons.
