Francis Parker's Deon Randall leaves Bishop's defensive back A.J. Chedrick in the dust on his way to a punt return touchdown
Lancers roll to second straight section title
Despite an early 10 a.m. kickoff in the Division V title game, Francis Parker was wide awake. The Lancers raced out to a big lead early and went on to beat Bishop’s 55-20 at Qualcomm Stadium to capture back-to-back section championships.
“We’ve been notorious slow starters and we’ve played great second halves. I don’t know if we did something backwards,” said Francis Parker head coach John Morrison. “Maybe we need to play all our games at 10 a.m. and meet pregame at 5:45 a.m.”
The Lancers (11-2) scored on their first four drives of the of the first half, including a nine-play, 97-yard drive in the second quarter capped by a Rochon Taylor six-yard touchdown run. Francis Parker’s defense also forced two turnovers, as the Bishop’s (8-5) offense could not get anything going.
“We knew coming in to the game that we had to go hard in the beginning and we couldn’t let up throughout the game because they’re known to never give up,” said Francis Parker quarterback Deon Randall. “We were going to start it out right and we were going to play hard the whole game.”
In the closing minutes of the first half, Randall took a Bishop’s punt and outraced the coverage for a 64-yard touchdown. That play gave the Lancers a commanding 34-0 lead at the break.
“We didn’t want to leave any doubt in their minds for us to go to state. We had to win by a large margin,” Randall said.
Despite two rushing touchdowns from Bishop’s running back Alec Fisher in the second half, Francis Parker rolled to a 35-point win. Already ranked as the top small school team in southern California, the Lancers’ win makes their appearance in next week’s Small Schools State Bowl Game very likely.
“We’ve been ranked preseason No. 1 and we’ve gone all the way through,” Morrison said. “We’ve done everything we can do and now it’s up to the commissioners again and hopefully they’ll help us out this time.”
Francis Parker won last year’s section title at Southwestern College, and Morrison was happy that Qualcomm Stadium was not too big for the Lancers. Randall even admitted that playing in the home of the Chargers made this title a little bit more special.
“Coming into this game I was kind of nervous playing in the stadium. It meant a lot and I was happy to win,” Randall said. “It was pretty special. I always watch Chargers games, so it was fun to play here.”
