Week 5 High Five

Game of the Week

Cathedral Catholic (3-0) at Otay Ranch (2-0-1) Friday 7 p.m.

One of three battles of unbeatens captures the Week 5 spotlight. The Dons have rolled over their first three opponents, including 30-13 over Carlsbad last week. The defending Division III champs will look for back-to-back wins over Division I opponents when they head south to take on the Mustangs. Otay Ranch tied Helix 19-19 last week on the road to remain unbeaten in one of the best games of the early season. The Mustangs defense will have the task of stopping Dons running back Tyler Gaffney, who has 14 touchdowns – 10 on the ground. Dual-threat quarterback Juan Leary leads the Mustangs offense; Leary has passed for 464 yards and rushed for 260 yards this season. Last season, Otay Ranch beat Cathedral Catholic 21-9.

Christian (4-0) at Central Union (4-0) Friday 7 p.m.

In another match-up of unbeatens, the Patriots make the long trip to El Centro to face the Spartans. Christian has won their first four games by an average of 31 points. Central Union has averaged 33 points per game this season. Christian beat Central Union 31-7 in 2007.

Coronado (3-0) at Madison (3-0) Friday 6:30 p.m.

This clash features two unbeatens both facing their toughest tests of the season as they open up Central League play. The Warhawks defense that held San Ysidro to seven points will face off against Islanders quarterback Mason Mills, who threw for 409 yards and five touchdowns in a 44-19 win over Mission Bay. Madison won this meeting last year 34-28.

Hoover (3-1) at Patrick Henry (3-0) Friday 6:30 p.m.

The Patriots are one of three unbeatens in the Eastern League and will look to stay that way against the Cardinals, who haven’t lost since the first week of the season. Something has to give in this game as Hoover’s offense scored 55 points last week while Patrick Henry’s defense has allowed an average of only six points per game.

St. Augustine (3-1) vs. Santa Fe Christian (2-1) at Westview HS 7 p.m.

A holy war of sorts will take place when these two private schools lock horns in Rancho Peñasquitos. The Eagles rallied from down 13-0 last week to beat Monte Vista 17-13 while the Saints scored 21 unanswered to beat La Jolla 28-10. Last season St. Augustine ousted Santa Fe Christian 16-6.
