El Cajon Valley off to school-best 4-0 start
Despite their unbeaten record, El Cajon Valley has been under the radar this season. After a dominant 35-14 win over the defending Division V champs Bishop’s at La Jolla High on Thursday night, they may not be able to say that for long.
“Of course we’re not the team to be looking for right now but who knows,” said Braves senior receiver and defensive back Gavino Pinal, “Hopefully we can get a little bit of respect out of this.”
After a scoreless first quarter, Braves quarterback Isaac Soliz found receiver Josue Moreno in the corner of the endzone to give El Cajon Valley a 7-0 lead just more than four minutes into the second quarter. El Cajon Valley added another touchdown just before the half and was ahead 14-0 at the break.
On the opening play of the second half, Bishop’s fumbled and El Cajon Valley linebacker Kendall Conley scooped up the ball and rumbled into the endzone from 28 yards out. Conley’s score was one of a number of big defensive plays the Braves had during the game, as they shut down the Knights’ passing attack and ground game.
“Our coach said all week we need to rally to the ball – we can’t just solo tackle. He said he wanted 40 assists and I think we gave it to him,” Pinal said.
Conley’s defensive touchdown was the first of three touchdowns El Cajon Valley put on the board in the opening five minutes of the second half. The last score was a 78-yard reverse by Pinal that put the Braves up 35-0 and gave the visitors a commanding lead.
“I don’t think they watched our first game film, because that is the only time we did it,” Pinal said. “We had the quarterback blocking for me – it’s kind of cool when you have a quarterback block for you.”
Bishop’s offense showed some life late in the third quarter. But even two touchdown passes from quarterback Joey Moreno to tight end Micah Seau were not enough to make the contest close.
“Everybody on the team knew that they were the Division V champs and so everybody knew that we had to step it up. We just played hard,” Pinal said.
Next Friday, El Cajon Valley (4-0) will look to continue their program-best start at Monte Vista. Bishop’s (2-2) will look to get back on track when they travel to El Centro to play Southwest.
