Football fans get a treat this week a day early in the form of a unique cross-division matchup. Thursday night, the undefeated Braves make the trip to La Jolla to take on the defending Division V champion Knights. Both teams are coming off huge home wins last weekend – El Cajon Valley crushed El Centro Southwest 63-0 on Friday and Bishop’s handled Los Angeles school Salesian 55-6 on Saturday. Braves senior running back Gerald Kendall has scored seven touchdowns this season. Backs Mike P. Jensen and Kyle Jester have combined for 546 yards rushing for Bishop’s.
Mission Hills (3-0) vs Chula Vista (2-1) at Otay Ranch HS Friday 7 p.m.
Fresh off a big win over Eastlake, the unbeaten Grizzlies head south to take on the Spartans. Can Mission Hills make a statement about North County football? No doubt Chula Vista, winners of two straight, will have something to say about that.
Otay Ranch (2-0) at Helix (2-1) Friday 7 p.m.
Are the Mustangs for real? After wins against Grossmont and Rancho Buena Vista that question will be answered this week when they travel to take on the Highlanders. Helix bounced back from their loss to Mira Mesa with a sound win over Carlsbad and is playing their fourth straight Division I opponent.
Coronado (2-0) at Mission Bay (2-1) Friday 3 p.m.
The Islanders play their first section opponent and their toughest opponent of the season when they make the quick trip to face the Buccaneers in an afternoon affair. Mission Bay will be looking to bounce back from a 21-6 loss to Bonita Vista in which their spread offense sputtered. Coronado beat their first two opponents by a combined score of 91-0.
Santa Margarita (1-2) at La Costa Canyon (2-1) Friday 7 p.m.
The Mavericks get their second shot at the Southern Section in two weeks after falling at home to Mission Viejo last Friday. Of La Costa Canyon Kenny Stills’ 18 receptions this season, five have been touchdowns. Santa Margarita’s only win of the season came at Poway.
