Bonita Vista grounds Mission Bay

Starting the season off with a game in Hawaii and a bye week, Bonita Vista has been somewhat of an unknown this season. After their 21-6 win at Mission Bay on Friday, the Barons can’t hide anymore.

“We were outsized, we were outspeeded and we were outstrengthed and our kids won. So that should tell you something – we’re in shape and our kids work hard,” said Bonita Vista head coach Carl Parrick.

The Barons grounded the Buccaneers’ spread offense that averaged 39 points in the first two games of the season. Mission Bay’s only touchdown came from their defense, when Dillon Baxter intercepted a pass and took it 97 yards a for score in the fourth quarter.

“They did a great job getting us out of our rhythm. We had no rhythm and we certainly couldn’t pass protect very well,” said Mission Bay head coach Willie Matson.

Buccaneers quarterback Bryan Allen was pressured throughout the game and finished 3-of-14 for 10 yards and an interception. Bonita Vista also shut down Baxter, who had 69 yards on 14 carries.

“When I came here today and watched them last week, I wasn’t sure we could beat them unless we had a complete all-out effort by our kids,” Parrick said.

On the offensive side of the ball, the Bonita Vista running back tandem of Ibrahim Hassan and Bryan Montreuil carved up Mission Bay’s defense. Hassan carried the ball 24 times for 162 yards and Montreuil ran for 142 yards and two touchdowns.

“Me and Bryan just always go 100 percent, we always go hard. That’s the one thing we keep pushing on each other,” Hassan said.

After Mission Bay cut Bonita Vista’s lead to eight early in the fourth quarter, the Barons responded with a long touchdown drive. A 15-yard touchdown run by Montreuil sealed the victory for the Barons.

“I’ve been coaching for 37 years and this is a big win for us,” Parrick said.

As big as the win was for Bonita Vista, it was an equally disappointing loss for Mission Bay.

“We got to go back and work pretty hard. We took a big step backwards today,” Matson said.

Next Friday, Bonita Vista (2-0) travels to play Castle Park (1-2) in a 7 p.m. game. Mission Bay (2-1) will look to rebound at home next Friday at 3 p.m. against Coronado (2-0).
