If Steele Canyon does not improve on their Division III quarterfinal appearance of a year ago, it won’t be because of a lack of experience. Twenty-seven of the 46 players on this year’s varsity roster are seniors.
“This is the first time we have been pretty senior-heavy. It’s always been pretty 50-50 in the past,” said Cougars head coach Ron Boehmke. “The senior leadership, the senior experience – that’s the kind of things we’re hoping pays off.”
These seniors were present for last year’s disappointing quarterfinal loss to St. Augustine in the playoffs. After earning the three-seed and a first round bye, the Cougars fell 35-21 at home to the Saints.
“Last season we ended on a tough note,” Boehmke said. “It left a sour taste in our mouth and a lot to work for for this year.”
The playoff loss served as motivation in the offseason. Senior running back and defensive back Jebari Washington said that carried into what was a difficult camp.
“It was hard but it was worth it,” Washington said. “The coaches were harder on us because they know that this year is our year to go all the way.”
In addition to camp being difficult, it has also been long. The Cougars have been practicing since Aug. 6.
“The hard part of camp this year was that it’s been such a long haul to the game,” Boehmke said. “We didn’t do very many two-a-days so we kind of extended it a couple days longer. It was nice last Friday to go against somebody else.”
Steele Canyon will be led this year by junior running back and linebacker Alex Perlin, senior tight end Cameron Moss, and senior tackle Ben Kauffman. Boehmke said that the Cougars’ offensive line is very experienced, which should yield success in their pro-style offense.
After more than a month of practices, Steele Canyon opens their season at home on Friday against Cathedral Catholic. This game against the defending Division III champions will be a tough test for the Cougars.
“I think we are going to be up for the game because one thing about our team is we love playing good teams,” Robinson said. “We’re up to play a ranked team; we want to have an upset.”
