When Lincoln took on Cathedral Catholic Friday night, the halftime score resembled that of a high school basketball game.
The Dons scored so many points in the second quarter that their head coach could not even recall the score after the first 24 minutes.
“They were up 18-14 and then we got some stops and got a couple touchdowns. I don’t even know what the halftime score was. I think we were up by a few,” said Cathedral Catholic head coach Sean Doyle.
The halftime score was 42-24. That lead was enough for Cathedral Catholic to cruise in the second half to a 58-32 win and remain unbeaten.
“Our kids did the job. We stopped them when we needed to and thank God we scored a lot of points,” Doyle said.
On the game’s first play from scrimmage, Lincoln wide receiver Davon Dunn took a screen pass 80 yards down the sideline into the endzone. In addition to that catch, Dunn also ran for an 80-yard touchdown and finished with 145 yards on the ground.
“We just thought we could get out there and throw a quick pass to our best player and get some blocks in front of him,” Lincoln head coach Ron Hamamoto said. “We just got lucky and it worked.”
That set in motion a wild first half. Lincoln was up 18-14 after a first quarter that saw 360 yards of total offense. When running back Hayvert Williams scored on a 14-yard run early in the second quarter, the Hornets were ahead 24-21.
From there though the Dons ripped off three touchdowns in the final 5:49 of the half to take an 18-point lead. Each of those touchdowns were courtesy of Cathedral Catholic running back Tyler Gaffney – a pair of touchdown runs and a 23-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Parker Hipp.
“It was brutal,” Gaffney said. “I felt like I was out there forever. I felt like it was the end of the game – I looked up and it was only the first half.
“If I would have just looked at it, no way I would have just thought it was the first half.”
The game slowed down in the second half. And even though Lincoln pulled within 10 just more than a minute into the third quarter on a 13-yard touchdown pass from Ronnie Yell to wide receiver Jonathan Simpson, the Dons were just too much.
Gaffney broke free on a 53-yard fun in the fourth quarter to put the game out of reach. The Dons star back rushed 29 times for 295 yards and four touchdowns, and two of his four receptions went for scores.
With the win in their Eastern League opener, Cathedral Catholic improves to 6-0 this season. Were it not for Oceanside, the Dons would be the best team in the county; some even think they are right now.
“This is one of the best high school football teams I’ve seen,” Hamamoto said.
“I like our odds against any team in San Diego right now,” Gaffney said. We’re playing some good football.”
Next week Cathedral (6-0, 1-0 Eastern) will look to stay unbeaten at Mira Mesa (4-2, 1-0). Lincoln (5-1, 0-1) will be back at home for the first time in five weeks when they host St. Augustine (4-2, 0-1).
