With league play officially underway in each of the section's 16 leagues today, it is time for a High School Red Zone first – predictions. Below are my predictions on which team will win which leagues:
Midseason League Picks
Avocado – La Costa Canyon The Mavericks’ tough preseason schedule will pay off now
Central – Madison The Warhawks came into the league undefeated and could complete it that way
Citrus – Maranatha Christian Eagles are the class of 8-man this season
Coastal – Christian No one has come close to beating the Patriots thus far and that won’t change
Desert – Imperial Tigers have looked the best of this four-man league
Eastern – Cathedral Catholic Dons will win section’s toughest top-to-bottom league
Grossmont North – El Capitan Vaqueros will ride quarterback Tanner Rust and the league’s best defense
Grossmont South – Helix You have to believe the Highlanders will shake off a slow start and continue their dominance of this league
Imperial Valley – Central Union The Spartans’ only contender will be Calexico
Mesa – Bonita Vista The running game is necessary for a successful league campaign and the Barons have a pair of star backs
Pacific – La Jolla Country Day The Torreys have slowed down after a hot start but will defend their title
Palomar – Carlsbad The Lancers are 3-3 despite being outscored by 62; they have to be doing something right
South Bay – Olympian Eagles are only team in the South Bay with a winning record
Southern – Calvin Christian The Crusaders have looked impressive so far; Foothills Christian could also contend
Western – Point Loma This one could go one of four or five ways but the Pointers had the toughest schedule so they get the nod
Valley – Oceanside Defending state champs are the county's best
Agree? Disagree? What are your picks? Leave a comment and let me know what you think.
