Game of the Week
Oceanside (5-0, 1-0) at Westview (5-0, 2-0) Friday 7 p.m.
The Pirates have made their state title defense look very easy. After a three-point win over Eastlake to open the season, Oceanside has beaten their opponents by an average of 27 points and put up big numbers in doing so. Oceanside’s Colorado-bound quarterback Jordan Wynn leads the section with 1475 passing yards and 13 touchdowns and Pirates receiver Demario Coleman leads receivers with 685 receiving yards. The Wolverines are looking for their second straight win over an unbeaten after taking down Valley Center 20-16 at home last week. Westview also features the dynamic duo of quarterback Tommy Hansen and wide receiver Steven Sousa – Hansen has connected with Sousa 23 times for 435 yards and seven touchdowns. If Westview falls behind they won’t be worried – the Wolverines have faced fourth-quarter deficits in three of their wins.
Best of the Rest
Lincoln (5-0) at Cathedral Catholic (5-0) Friday 7 p.m.
If Oceanside is the best team in the section, Cathedral Catholic is not far behind. The Dons offense has averaged 42 points per game and been nearly unstoppable. It was more of the same last week in a 63-7 win against Chino, as running back Tyler Gaffney rushed for 118 yards and four touchdowns and quarterback Parker Hipp finished 11-for-12 for 209 yards and two scores. Lincoln has run over their opponents this season, averaging just less than 50 points per game. In a 42-10 win at Mission Bay last week, Hornets running backs Davon Dunn and Hayvert Williams both rushed for more than 100 yards. In last year’s playoffs, the Dons crushed the Hornets 51-7 in the quarterfinals.
Valhalla (5-0) at Helix (3-1-1) Friday 7 p.m.
Although the Norsemen are undefeated, the Highlanders will be by far their toughest opponent of the season. Valhalla quarterback Pete Thomas has thrown for more than 1200 yards and tossed 17 touchdowns to only one interception. The Highlanders returned to form last week with a 49-0 win against West Hills and will look to continue their dominance of the Grossmont South League, where they have not lost a game since 2005.
Scripps Ranch (4-1) vs St. Augustine (4-1) at Serra High Friday 6:30 p.m.
Expect Eastern League contests like the opener for these two to be featured for the rest of the season – Eastern League teams finished the preseason a combined 25-5 and no team is below .500. Neither team has lost since the first week of the season and both lit up the scoreboard in wins last week – the Saints scored 56 and the Falcons only had 44.
Otay Ranch (3-1-1) vs Bonita Vista (5-0) at Southwestern College 7 p.m.
With each passing week the Barons look more impressive, including a 36-13 over previously unbeaten Patrick Henry. Bonita Vista is led by the running back tandem of Ibrahim Hassan and Bryan Montreuil. The Mustangs success depends on quarterback Juan Leary, who has both passed and rushed for more than 500 yards this season.
