In a matchup of unbeatens, Bonita Vista threw down the hammer against Patrick Henry Friday at Southwestern College. The result was a 36-13 win that kept the Barons amongst the handful of unbeatens in San Diego.
“Patrick Henry said they were coming out for us. I guess they didn’t get the job done and we’re still undefeated,” said Bonita Vista running back Bryan Montreuil.
Montrueil rushed for a game-high 102 yards and two touchdowns on 19 carries. Montrueil is part of Bonita Vista’s fearsome backfield that includes senior Ibrahim Hassan and the new guy – sophomore Greg McGee. Each of the three backs got big gains against the Patriots defense.
“They’re all a compliment to each other. They all kind of bring similarities but they also bring diversity, too,” said Bonita Vista head coach Carl Parrick.
The unselfish attitude of Bonita Vista’s running backs is emblematic of the entire Barons team. Hassan said team play is the concept behind the golden hammer that players rallied around following the Barons win – a hammer based on a speech Parrick gave earlier in the season.
“Just talking about the complete team effort. It takes a complete team to win games, to come out on top,” Hassan said.
After the Barons jumped out to a 13-0 lead, the Patriots got on the board when Demajahli Murphy intercepted a pass and returned it 83 yards for a touchdown. Both teams traded touchdowns and Bonita Vista junior kicker Ruben Vasquez nailed a 36-yard field goal as time expired to give the Barons a 23-13 lead at halftime.
After recess, the Barons put the game out of reach. With just more than nine minutes to play in the third quarter, Patriots quarterback Kevin Farley was hit and fumbled the football, a fumble recovered by Bonita Vista linebacker Daniel Scanlon in the endzone. After that play, Patrick Henry was never the same for the rest of the night.
Depsite Parrick claiming his team lacks both size and experience, Bonita Vista is undefeated heading into Mesa League play. Although Parrick can easily point out the Barons’ shortcomings, he can just as easily point to why Bonita Vista is off to their best start since 1993.
“This is a fired up group of kids. They get excited, they come to work and we just do what we’re supposed to be doing out here,” Parrick said.
So far this season what Bonita Vista is supposed to be doing on the field has been more than enough.
Bonita Vista (5-0) opens league play against Otay Ranch (3-1-1) next Friday at Southwestern College. Patrick Henry (4-1) will look to bounce back in their Eastern League opener at Mira Mesa (3-2) next Friday.
