Game of the Week: Cathedral Catholic at Otay Ranch

Cathedral Catholic runs over Otay Ranch in battle of unbeatens

No team has found a way to stop Cathedral Catholic’s offense this season. Add previously unbeaten Otay Ranch to the list, as the Dons crushed the Mustangs Friday night on their home field 42-14.

For the Dons, it was their second straight win over a quality Division I opponent. It was also the second straight week Cathedral Catholic exacted some revenge, avenging a 21-9 loss from a year ago.

“They played a great game last year but we thought we gave it away a little bit and we just wanted to prove that,” said Cathedral Catholic head coach Sean Doyle.

Capitalizing on Mustang miscues, Cathedral Catholic raced out to a 28-0 lead less than two minutes into the second quarter. A sneak by Dons quarterback Parker Hipp in the closing minutes of the first half gave Cathedral Catholic a 35-0 lead at halftime that would be more than enough.

On the first play from scrimmage in the second half, Gaffney ended any hope Otay Ranch may have had for a comeback by bolting 80 yards untouched to the endzone. The Dons’ star back finished with 163 yards rushing and two touchdowns despite sitting out a majority of the second half.

”Coach said, ‘You know you might be pulled out pretty soon here,’” Gaffney said. “I had to do something with the ball. It was kind of an inspiration.”

Dons quarterback Hipp only had to throw the ball six times, but two his four completions were touchdown passes to receiver Brad Harrington. Defensively, Dons defensive back Ryan McLoughlin picked off two passes and returned one 54 yards for a score in the second quarter.

After a tie at Helix the week before, Otay Ranch suffered a letdown in the blowout loss. Mustangs head coach Brad Burton said the team tackled poorly and had too many blown assignments.

“I told (the team) that I’m glad this isn’t the last game of the year and that’s a really good team we played,” Burton said. “But maybe this is a wake up call that we need to work on some things that we’re having problems with.”

Mustangs quarterback Juan Leary was held in check by the Dons defense until late in the game. Leary ran for a late score and finished 11-of-19 with 54 yards passing and two interceptions.

With another dominant win, Cathedral Catholic is emerging as one of the best teams in the county this season – and not just in their own division.

“Even though everybody thinks we’re just a D-III team, we’re trying to show we can hit all the divisions,” Gaffney said.

Cathedral Catholic (4-0) will look to remain perfect when they host Southern Section school Chino Friday at 7 p.m. Otay Ranch (2-1-1) will take on El Cajon Valley on the road Friday at 6:30 p.m. in a matchup of teams both coming off their first losses.
