Quarterfinal games usually don’t test the top seed this much, but no team was more impressive in the first round than Vista, who crushed Otay Ranch 35-0. Expect a defensive struggle – the Mavericks allowed 12.4 points per game in Avocado League play and the Panthers have shut out their last two opponents. La Costa Canyon receiver Kenny Stills (1,039 yards) is one of only four 1,000-yard receivers in the section; Stills has 14 receiving touchdowns.

The top two passers in the section, the Falcons’ Tate Forcier (2,990 yards) and the Wolverines’ Tommy Hansen (2,703) should put on an aerial assault in this one. With both teams coming in averaging more than 35 points per game, it may take only one or two defensive stops to advance to the semis.
Division III
No. 6 Serra (8-3) at No. 3 Valhalla (9-1) Friday 7 p.m.
Can the Conquistadors stop the Pete Thomas express? Only one team has held the Norsemen below 21 points and their quarterback averages 250 yards per game. Against Serra, the Norsemen won’t be able to rest easy until the final whistle Serra has had fourth quarter comebacks in four of their wins this season.
Division IV
No. 8 Imperial (9-1) at No. 1 Valley Center (8-2) Friday 7 p.m.
The defending Division IV champion Jaguars got the No. 1 seed ahead of undefeated Madison. Their reward? The one-loss Tigers, champions of the Desert League. Valley Center’s duo of Tyler Bernard (1,968 yards, 21 touchdowns) and James Johnson (883, 14) is one of the best in the section.
Division V
No. 5 La Jolla Country Day (8-3) at No. 4 Army-Navy (8-2) Friday 7 p.m.
In this clash, the Torreys will look to exact some revenge – the Warriors won a Nov. 1 meeting between these two 27-21. Army-Navy has not lost to a San Diego section team this season.
