Division II State Bowl Game
St. Mary’s (Stockton) (12-2) vs. Cathedral Catholic (13-0) Saturday 4 p.m. at Home Depot Center, Carson
The section commissioners have decided – and it is the Dons who will be the South Division representative in the Division II State Bowl Game. Those who don’t think Cathedral Catholic deserved the bid can’t deny their dominance this season. Of the Dons’ 13 wins, 10 came by margins of 26 or more. That list includes their dominant 49-13 win over Valhalla in the Division III section championship last Friday at Qualcomm Stadium. Dons senior running back Tyler Gaffney has rushed for 2,537 yards and scored 51 total touchdowns this season – the latter a single-season section record. The USC or Stanford-bound senior’s productivity helps quarterback Parker Hipp (2,260 yards, 23 touchdowns) and receiver Brady Harrington (744 yards, seven touchdowns) strike for the occasional deep ball. On the other side of the ball, Cathedral Catholic’s defense has allowed 16 points per game this season, including a total of 27 in three playoff games.
St. Mary’s are the Sac-Joaquin Section Division I champs and come in riding a nine-game winning streak. The Rams’ only losses were to Bellarmine, open division champions of the Central Coast Section, and Central Catholic, Division V finalists in the Sac-Joaquin Section. The Rams average 40 points per game, led by Oregon State-bound quarterback Cody Vaz, who has thrown for 3,512 yards and 28 touchdowns. Vaz’s favorite targets are juniors Josh Harper (67 receptions, 1,024 yards, 10 touchdowns) and Louie Lechich (65, 914, 5). The Rams defense allows an average of 18.4 per game, and senior linebacker Jon Sarris leads the team with 102 tackles. St. Mary’s finished first in the Tri-City Athletic League, a perfect 5-0 in league play.
