Division I: La Costa Canyon vs. Escondido

Mavericks win first CIF title in school history

It seems these days that everybody is going green and La Costa Canyon is no exception. The Mavericks routed Escondido 45-28 Friday at Qualcomm Stadium to win their first section championship in school history.

Escondido opened the scoring late in the first quarter with a Tim Zier 17-yard touchdown run. But as the first quarter ended, the Cougars had no idea what was in store.

Forty-three seconds into the second quarter, La Costa Canyon tied the game with a two-yard Weston Manor touchdown run. The Mavericks then added a field goal and two touchdowns and although Escondido running back Ricky Seale ran for a score between those three, the Mavericks had a 24-14 lead at halftime.

Any thoughts of an Escondido comeback were erased after the third quarter. La Costa Canyon (11-2) exploded for three touchdowns in five minutes and had a commanding 31-point lead headed into the fourth quarter. Escondido (10-3) scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter, but La Costa Canyon still won going away.

In a losing effort, Seale ran for 216 yards and three touchdowns on 32 carries. For the Mavericks, running back Seth Hanson led the team in rushing 136 yards and a touchdown, and quarterback Sebastian Frausto was 12-for-19 for 199 yards, one passing and one rushing touchdown.
