The Padres flagship station, sports talk-radio 1090 AM announced on Monday that they have locked up a deal with the San Diego State Aztecs to broadcast football and basketball starting this season. The contract includes using 1700 AM and 105.7 FM when needed.
BCA radio owns all three stations in San Diego, and 105.7 FM, also pegged as The Walrus, will technically be known as the station that carries the Aztecs. However, when the Aztecs do not interfere with San Diego Padres broadcasts, 1090 AM will carry select games.
“We appreciate the opportunity to return to The Mighty 1090 and create a new partnership 105.7 The Walrus and BCA Radio,” said San Diego State Director of Athletics Jim Sterk. “They have outstanding coverage and programming to follow.”
“We’re happy that The Mighty 1090 and 105.7 The Walrus will serve as our new radio home for the Aztec Sports Network in San Diego,” said Aztecs Sports Properties’ General Manager Jeff Bolitho. “The Mighty 1090 is a 50,000-watt AM station with a sports format. It will be a great fit for Aztec fans and alumni.”
The agreement will include full coverage of men’s basketball and football of Aztecs games. There will also be coverage of select baseball and women’s basketball games.
What does this have to do with the Padres? Nothing directly, their coverage won’t be affected. However, the more sports that are broadcast on the station can only be advantageous for the station in general and to the Padres as well since more listener-ship means that Padres tidbits could fall onto otherwise deaf ears.
The Aztecs were previously under contract with Clear Channel Communications, and were either carried on 600 AM or 1360 AM, the latter station unable to broadcast a signal that could be heard even in Tijuana. With 1090 AM, or 1700 AM or 105.7 FM, the signal strength is higher than many stations due to the transmitters having the ability to carry a higher signal because Mexico’s broadcast laws are not so restrictive as those in the U.S.
Bottom line, good for BCA radio, good for 1090 AM, The Walrus (seriously, think about changing that nick, maybe to a more attractive marine mammal?) and 1700 AM. And the Padres will get some more run. And good for them, too. Can’t hurt a thing.
