SDSU beats Oklahoma, advances in NCAA Tournament

With a 70-55 win, SDSU advances to face Florida Gulf Coast in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

After making the NCAA Tournament as a #7 seed, SDSU faced off against #10 seed Oklahoma. In a fiercely competitive match up, the Aztecs came away with a 70-55 victory and advance to the next round of the NCAA Tournament. Before the game, #15 seed Florida Gulf Coast pulled off a major upset by knocking off #2 seed Georgetown. SDSU will now face Florida Gulf Coast in their next tournament game on Sunday at 4:10pm.

Free throw shooting sealed the win for the Aztecs. A normally mediocre free throw shooting team, SDSU showed that they could make them when it mattered most, sinking 16 of their 17 attempts. The lone missed free throw was by Deshawn Stephens late in the game when the Aztecs were firmly in control.

Jamaal Franklin and James Rahon led the way for the Aztecs. Franklin had 21 points, 8 rebounds, 5 assists and 2 steals in the contest. Rahon had 17 points in only 19 minutes and was very efficient from the field, especially early in the contest.

The Aztecs defensive effort won them the game. They held Oklahoma to 55 points while not allowing a field goal for an eight minute stretch in the second half. They were credited with 3 blocks and 5 steals and altered many more shots and passes than that. SDSU forced 9 turnovers and used several of those to go on a 8-0 run that helped give them a commanding lead in the game.
