The last home game of the season is considered ‘Senior Night’ where all senior players on the team are honored. Wednesday night at Viejas Arena was no exception. SDSU honored their six seniors before the game against Air Force, giving them framed jerseys and a standing ovation. The Aztecs then came out and beat Air Force 58-51 in front of a sold out and frenzied crowd. SDSU won with their defense and in spite of shooting less than 34% from the field, their second lowest shooting percentage of the season. After leading by 5 at the half, the Aztecs let the Falcons back in the game by giving up several three pointers and shooting a terrible percentage from the free throw line. The Aztecs have one remaining game, a road matchup against Boise St, that is important to win to remain the #4 seed in the MWC Tournament.
The Aztecs had some real shooting woes. Not only did SDSU shoot 33.9% from the field, they also only managed to shoot 51.9% from the free throw line and 23.5% from beyond the arc. With a tough road matchup looming against Boise St and the Mountain West Conference Tournament next weekend in Las Vegas, they need to find their stroke. The Aztecs seem to live or die by their jump shooting abilities on any given night.
Saying good bye to the seniors will be tough. The Aztecs are losing three impact players as well as three other beloved seniors. DeShawn Stephens, Chase Tapley and James Rahon, all main stay players and starters have played their last home game at Viejas Arena. Replacing three seniors will not be an easy task, but the Aztecs do have several freshman, recruits and transfers with loads of talent. The Aztecs other seniors are Narbeh Ebrahimian, Aaron Douglas and Jeremy Castleberry.
