Padres win two straight over Indians and White Sox

The San Diego Padres improve to 6-5 in Cactus League play, taking down the Cleveland Indians on Saturday and then shutting down the Chicago White Sox on Sunday

Well, one thing that seems to be obvious early on in 2013 spring training for the Padres is that these boys can hit a little bit. On Saturday afternoon in Goodyear, San Diego overcame a six run deficit and beat the Indians 11-8.

Edinson Volquez didn't look sharp in his last start before heading off to join the Dominican Republic for the World Baseball Classic, but the Padres recovered nicely, regardless. Volquez gave up 6 runs in the first inning, and eight overall hits, including a hit batter and a home run.

The Padres battled back with a seven-run third inning to take the lead. Logan Forsythe tripled and Will Venable walked, setting up Mark Kotsay to single home Forsythe.

Jesus Guzman singled home Venable, and then Kyle Blanks hit an infield single and the bases were loaded. Indians starter Ubaldo Jimenez was yanked in favor of Edward Paredes, but Cody Ransom singled and Kotsay scored, keeping the bases full.

Alexi Amarista then singled home Guzman, and an out later, Jaff Decker grounded out to score Blanks. Forsythe then hit his second triple in the inning, plating Ransom and Amarista, and the Padres led 7-6.

The Friars added on in the fourth inning, when Kotsay opened with a single and one out later, Kyle Blanks singled followed by Cody Ransom. Kotsay crossed the plate and the Padres led 8-6 over the Indians.

The bottom of the fourth inning found the score tied after Padres prospect Robbie Erlin took the mound, after Drew Stubbs reached on an error by Cody Ransom. Asdrubal Cabrera then doubled, putting Stubbs and third base, and Stubbs scored on a sacrifice fly by Jason Kipnis.

Cabrera then stole third base and Nick Swisher singled Cabrera home, and the score was tied 8-8. The Padres sixth inning busted up the deadlock.

After three consecutive walks, a sacrifice fly by Amarista and a single by Decker scored two runs. The Padres led 10-8 and held it.

Gregorio Petit hit a solo home run in the eighth inning, and that capped the scoring. The Padres beat the Indians 11-8 in Goodyear on Saturday.

Sunday's game was less offensive, and Padres pitching shined for the most part, as San Diego shut out the Chicago White Sox 4-0. Clayton Richard threw for the Padres against Jake Peavy, for whom the Padres traded away Peavy for in 2009.

Richard walked two in the first inning, but was otherwise flawless. Peavy looked good but ran into some trouble thanks to the Padres bats.

With one out, a Will Venable single and a Chase Headley double put the Padres up 1-0 after an inning. In the second inning, Chris Denorfia singled and Cameron Maybin doubled to plate Denorfia and then took third base on the throw. Nick Hundley then doubled to bring home Maybin and the Padres were up 3-0 on the White Sox after two innings.

There wasn't much that happened after that except for good pitching on both sides. In the eighth inning, Jaff Decker hit a blast over the left field fence and the Padres won 4-0.

Clayton Richard, Anthony Bass, Tim Stauffer, Daniel Stange, Wilfredo Boscan, Arturo Lopez, and Tommy Layne all combined for the shut-out for the Padres.

Notes:

On Monday, the Padres will travel to Surprise to play the Texas Rangers. They'll face Yu Darvish and go with left-hander Eric Stults. The game starts at 12:05 PM PST and can apparently be seen on any television you have connected in some way to Fox Sports San Diego (hint: if you have Time Warner then you are screwed, but you probably already know that). No idea still about why many of these games aren't on radio (1090 AM carried Sunday's game, but not Saturday's), but we'll go hunting on Monday and find out what those rascals are up to on the Padres radio flagship station.
