After a ten-game road trip that saw the Padres lose nine straight, the hope was that coming home would stop their nose-dive and the club could right the ship. It didn’t happen on Monday as the Colorado Rockies shut down the Padres 4-2.
Padres starter Edinson Volquez gave up two runs in the first inning and then two more in the sixth, while Rockies starting pitcher Tyler Chatwood didn’t even give up the first hit to the Padres until the fourth inning. San Diego finally scored two runs off of Chatwood in the seventh inning, but another rally in the ninth fizzled as Rafael Betancourt got the save for the Rockies.
“We just couldn’t get to Chatwood, we couldn’t really solve him,” manager Buddy Black said. “Lively fast ball, quick arm, good hook, couple of good change-ups, too.”
Chase Headley got one of the five Padres hits off of Chatwood. “He had a really good fastball tonight and mixed in some off-speed pitches and did a good job pitching in, pitching out, pitching up, pitching down,” Chase said of Chatwoods stuff.
For Volquez, it was a frustrating evening. “I was rushing myself, and I was erring a little bit, I just have to slow myself down,” said Volquez.
Black analyzed the performance of Edinson Volquez postgame. “A little erratic at times, tried to reel it back in. Threw some zeros up on the board in the middle part of the game. That’s always tough, the lead-off walk, unless you can maneuver out of it. He maneuvered out a couple of times. Overall, his stuff was good,” Buddy said.
If there was a bright spot on Monday’s game, it was from the bull pen. Brad Brach threw 1 2/3 innings with Dale Thayer and Huston Street pitching an inning each, and none gave up a run.
“The bull pen did fine,” Black said. “Brach came in, sacrifice fly and then a punch out with the bases loaded, and put up a zero the next inning. Dale was fine, and Huston was much better today which was good. The way that Huston threw is a little bit more indicative of what he can do.”
Otherwise, the scoreboard is the indicator of where the Padres stand, and now they stand exactly where they stood in the first twenty games of the season when they opened with a pitiful 5-15 mark. Once again, at 40-50, the Friars find themselves in a tailspin and desperately need a good run from here to get back to a respectable mark.
Notes:
Brad Brach was recalled from AAA Tucson while Robbie Erlin was sent down. “It’s a combination of a couple of things. Robbie still has some things to clean up in the minor leagues,” Black said pregame. “And we need another pitcher, our bull pen has been taxed over the last ten days. I felt we needed a fresh arm, as did Josh [Byrnes] and A.J. [Hinch]. And Robbie’s last couple of performances have been such where they showed that there’s a couple of things that require immediate attention, and he’ll get that in the minor leagues.”
Yasmani Grandal has an ACL so ripped up that it requires surgery. The Padres estimate that Grandal will need between 9 and 12 months to recover. Catcher Rene Rivera, who was recalled Sunday from AAA Tucson, started on Monday and went 0 for 2 with a strike out.
Tuesday, the Padres will try and win for the first time in ten games. The Padres will offer Eric Stults (6-7, 3.70) up against Jhoulys Chacin (8-3, 3.74) for the Rockies. Game time is 7:10 PM PDST and as usual, 1090 AM will carry audio while Fox Sports San Diego will televise.
