Jedd Gyorko had better knock it off or everyone is going to think that his power is commonplace. Gyorko lit up Cincinnati's Wilkin De La Rosa for his third home run of the pre-season to seal the deal and the Padres beat the Reds 7-5 in Peoria on Tuesday afternoon.
Jose De Paula replaced Padres starter Anthony Bass in the top of the third inning, and the Reds got on the board first. Zack Cozart reached on an error by Padres 2nd baseman Alexi Amarista, and then Chris Heisey tripled home Cozart.
After Miguel Oliva struck out, Shin-Soo Choo singled and Heisey crossed home plate. The Reds went up 2-0 and that held until the Padres unleashed their offense in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Pedro Villareal took the mound for the Reds and Chase Headley greeted him with a double. Yonder Alonso then singled up the middle and Headley took third base.
Yasmani Grandal simgled home Headley with Alonso taking third base and the Padres were on the board. Travis Buck singled home Alonso and the score was tied at two.
Cameron Maybin singled to load the bases and Kyle Blanks followed with a sacrifice fly and the Padres took the lead for the first time. Alexi Amarista followed with a single, scoring Buck, and then Amarista advanced to second base on the throw with Grandal holding at third base.
Everth Cabrera then singled which plated Maybin, and the Padres were up 6-2. But the Reds weren't finished.
In the top of the sixth inning with Joe Hatcher on the hill for the Padres, Emmanuel Burriss opened with a single and Jack Hannahan followed with a walk. Burriss stole third base, and then Ryan Hanigan hit into a force play with Hannahan out at second base.
Xavier Paul then lifted a sacrifice fly to left field but the play was muffed by Jonathan Galvez which allowed Burriss to score and put Paul on first and Hanigan on second base. Henry Rodriguez then doubled to left field which scored Hanigan, with Paul taking third base.
Cesar Izturis reached on a fielding error by Jeudy Valdez and Paul scored. The Reds closed the gap to 6-5 after five and a half innings.
It remained that way until the Padres added an insurance run in the eighth inning. Gyorko took De La Rosa deep on the first pitch he saw from him, and the Padres held on and won 7-5.
Padres prospect Kevin Quackenbush closed out the ninth, albeit the inning was somewhat sketchy for the closer. After Henry Rodriguez hit an infield single, Quackenbush walked Izturis before Ryan La Marre grounded into a double play. Quackenbush then walked Tucker Barnhart, who was subsequently caught stealing second base for the final out of the game.
Notes:
Still no Carlos Quentin, who is working but fighting to remain healthier this season and not have the repeat of last season. Quentin had his knee scoped in the off-season, but he'll get some work in before March.
The Padres will play the Colorado Rockies on Wednesday with a split squad playing the Oakland Athletics continuing Cactus League play. They plan to start Eric Stults against the A's and Sean O'Sullivan against the Rockies. Both games start at 12:05 PM PST and at least one game can be caught on radio ESPN 1700 AM.
