SDSU faced off against Fresno St at Viejas Arena on Saturday and walked away with a 75-53 victory. The Aztecs used focused defense to give the Bulldogs problems all afternoon, holding them to 24% shooting in the first half and only 29.3% for the whole game. Besides the low shooting percentage for Fresno St, SDSU racked up 6 blocks and 4 steals. After leading by 9 at the half, the Aztecs used a 13-0 run to start the second half to grab firm control of the game.
Jamaal Franklin scores his 1000th point for SDSU. Franklin's ascendance into the SDSU history books is impressive. Coach Steve Fisher wanted him to red shirt his freshman year but Franklin said no. His sophomore year, Franklin came out of nowhere to become the Mountain West player of the year. He has continued right where he left off last year and is dominating the conference. It will be interesting to see if Franklin sticks around for his senior year as he is already being talked about as a possible first round pick in the NBA draft.
Tapley’s shooting woes continue while Thames is still nursing his back injury. Chase Tapley continued to have issues shooting the ball effectively with his wrist injury. He was 2-7 and at one point took a hard fall on his wrist after being fouled. Xavier Thames played 13 minutes off the bench, but never looked fluid or comfortable on the court. James Rahon netted 14 points and Winston Shepard 10 points as they made up for the lack of consistent production by the injured Aztecs. Skylar Spencer also made the most of extra minutes. In only 19 minutes he scored 6 points, had 6 rebounds and an impressive 3 blocks.
