Tapley hits last second three, gives SDSU win

Chase Tapley knocked down a last second three pointer to give the Aztecs a home win over Boise St

SDSU beat Boise St on Wednesday 63-62, thanks to a last second three pointer by Chase Tapley. The game was a wild one from start to finish with both teams going on big runs and making timely three point baskets. The Aztecs had a 17 point lead at one point in the first half and then found themselves down 3 points with three minutes to play. Boise St leading by 2 in the closing seconds, seemingly stopped a Jamaal Franklin drive until the ball squirted out and went right to Tapley. He faked a pass, squared his shoulders and launched a three pointer that went in, to give the Aztecs a win at Viejas Arena.

Tapley didn’t have a very good night shooting, but he made them when they mattered most. James Rahon, Winston Shepard and Jamaal Franklin all shot 50% from behind the arc. Tapley only made one of his five attempts, but the shot he made won the game. For the game, Tapley scored 12 points on 33% shooting and tallied 5 assists. His wrist injury will be something to keep a close eye on.

With Xavier Thames out, JJ O’Brien is shining. With Thames nagging injury, more minutes are being played by O’Brien and Shepard. Shepard has been consistent all season with his ability to get in the lane and his passing skills. O’Brien is starting to become a dominant force on the boards. It seems like twice a game he gets a big offensive rebound and turns it into points for SDSU. Against Boise St he had 4 offensive rebounds, 10 points, a block and a steal. He is making the most of his opportunity.

Where have Dwayne Polee and James Johnson gone? Why not more Skylar Spencer? Yet again Johnson and Polee didn’t get any minutes. Fisher has tightened up the rotation considerably, which is understandable. But with Thames out and Tapley not shooting the ball well, why not get your big men some minutes? Spencer is consistently proving he deserves more minutes. He had 4 blocks and 3 rebounds in 13 minutes of play. He is pure energy and defense off the bench.
