On Tuesday afternoon, before the team photo was taken on the field, the Padres introduced Mike Dee as CEO and President of the ball club before a modest group of media at Petco Park. Padres Executive Chairman Ron Fowler and lead investor Peter Seidler were also in attendance representing the ownership group, along with other front office personnel such as General Manager Josh Byrnes.
“I call him Mr. Outside, because he’ll be out and about in the community,” said Fowler to media.
Seidler was more pointed about the hiring of Dee. “Bottom line, this move is about winning baseball, Mike working with Josh [Byrnes] and the baseball people and the rest of the organization,” he said.
Dee spoke, saying that his arrival in San Diego was “the last move” of his sports career. “On the baseball side, obviously we’ve got some work to do,” Dee said. Dee worked with General Manager Josh Byrnes when both were with the Boston Red Sox organization, and the Red Sox won the World Series in 2004 with Dee as COO and Byrnes as Assistant General Manager.
After addressing media, Dee took some questions from members of media. One question involved possible changes to the Padres uniforms in the uniforms in the near future, but Dee said that considering uniform changes were low on the list of priorities.
When asked about possible increases to player payroll, Dee was non-commital. The Padres are last in their division when it comes to player payroll at the start of the 2013, and only the Oakland Athletics, Tampa Bay Rays, Miami Marlins, and Houston Astros have a lower payroll in MLB from the beginning of the season.
National League West team payroll as of April 1, 2013 Los Angeles Dodgers - $220 million San Francisco Giants - $136 million Arizona Diamondbacks - $90 million Colorado Rockies - $72 million San Diego Padres - $68 million
Padres team payroll is currently $72 million including Ian Kennedy’s salary from Arizona, along with dead money (players under contract but no longer with the team) and deferred signing bonuses. Carlos Quentin ($9.5 million) is currently injured and may be out for the season, and has played slightly over half of the games in the season if he doesn’t return.
Cameron Maybin ($3.1 million) has only played in 14 games this season, and is likely out for the year. Jason Marquis ($3 million) is gone for the year, as is Cory Luebke ($1.1 million) with another $2.3 million total from several players who won’t see action this season.
