Cubs take down Padres at Wrigley

The San Diego Padres faced the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field in Chicago and left the bats behind

The Padres travelled to Chicago to face the Cubs on an upbeat and hopeful note, after winning four straight games and hitting better and what with the pitching holding up. But the bats weren’t connecting on Monday and the pitching could have been better as the Cubs beat the Padres 5-3 at Wrigley Field.

The top of the first inning saw a good start from the Padres as Everth Cabrera led off with a walk and one out later, Chase Headley singled and Cabrera took second base. Both runners moved up 90 feet on a wild pitch from Cubs starting pitcher Jeff Zamardzija, and then Cabrera scored on a second wild pitch that struck out Carlos Quentin, and the Padres jumped out to a 1-0 lead.

In the bottom of the second inning, the Cubs went up on top off of Padres starter Clayton Richard, thanks to a couple of former Padres now with the Cubs. Scott Hairston and Cody Ransom hit back-to-back home runs and the Cubs led 2-1.

Scott Hairston last played with the Padres in 2010, and Cody Ransom began the season in the Padres organization. Ransom played in five games with the Padres earlier this season, and was hitless in eleven at bats with five strikeouts before being designated for assignment, and the Cubs claimed him off of waivers.

The Cubs added on in the bottom of the fourth inning. Welington Castillo doubled to open the frame and then with two outs, Darwin Barney doubled to center, plating Castillo, and Chicago increased their lead to 3-1 over San Diego.

In the top of the fifth inning, the Padres tied the score. Everth Cabrera singled to center with one out on a ball that went off of Zamardzija, and Chris Denorfia walked with Cabrera taking second base.

After Chase Headley struck out, Carlos Quentin drew a walk to load the bases, and Yonder Alonso singled to left field, driving in Cabrera and Denorfia. The game was tied, 3-3.

The Cubs broke the tie in the bottom of the sixth inning, when Alfonso Soriano singled and Welington Castillo walked. Scott Hairston ground into a double play, with Soriano taking third base.

Cody Ransom then singled to center field and Ransom scored and that was all for Clayton Richard. Anthony Bass came in and gave up a double to Darwin Barney and Ransom scored, and the Cubs took a 5-3 lead and held it.

The Padres had the bases loaded with one out in the seventh and couldn’t score, runners on second and third with two outs in the eighth and left them stranded, so there were opportunities that were missed. Kevin Gregg got the Padres in order in the ninth inning for his fourth save.

The Padres struck out 14 times on Monday, going only 1 for 10 with runners in scoring position. Everth Cabrera had a good night, going 3 for 4, and with Yonder Alonso’s two runs batted in, he leads the club with 14 on the year.

Notes:

Tuesday, the Padres will try the Cubs again, sending Andrew Cashner (1-1, 3.26) to the hill to face Scott Feldman (1-3, 3.92) of the Cubs. Game time is again at 5:05 PM PDST, 1090 AM on radio and Fox Sports San Diego for television.
