How do you frame 21 innings where the Padres haven’t even scored a run? Certainly, San Francisco Giants pitching sure is good, but they were made better by facing a complete lack of offense from the San Diego Padres.
Padres starter Eric Stults wasn’t horrible but the Giants took every advantage with the bats and Barry Zito pitched masterfully to shut down the San Diego offense as the Giants beat the Padres 5-0 on Sunday to complete the three-game sweep. It was the third time in six series that the Padres have been swept this season.
In the bottom of the third inning, Andres Torres got the first base hit for the Giants and then Brandon Crawford singled to left and Torres took third base. Barry Zito laid down a bunt and sacrificed Crawford to second base with one out.
Angel Pagan then doubled home Torres and Crawford, with Pagan going to third base after tagging up on a Marco Scutaro fly ball. Pablo Sandoval then literally golfed a Stults curveball inches off of the ground into center field and Pagan scored and the Giants jumped out to a 3-0 lead over the Padres.
In the bottom of the fifth with two outs, Pablo Sandoval singled to shortstop and Buster Posey followed with a home run to left field. After five innings the Giants led the Padres 5-0.
That was all that the Giants needed. Stults went seven innings and gave up all five Giants runs on eight hits while striking out two, and Thad Weber pitched a scoreless inning in relief.
Barry Zito also went seven innings for the Giants giving up five hits and a walk while striking out four. Chad Gaudin pitched two innings in relief for San Francisco and gave up a hit and struck out two Padres hitters.
Everth Cabrera and Nick Hundley had two hits each while Chase Headley had a single and a stolen base and Eric Stults had a single. The loss puts the Padres at 5-13 while the Giants improved to 12-7.
Notes:
Kyle Blanks ran into the outfield wall in the sixth inning on Sunday, making a nice catch but getting stitches after his sunglasses sliced him just below his left eyebrow. Blanks came out of the game and was shaken up a bit but is otherwise okay after getting stitched up. He is expected to be available to play on Monday.
The red-hot Milwaukee Brewers come to San Diego on Monday, winners of seven straight games. The Padres will face Kyle Lohse (0-1, 2.70) of the Brewers while Jason Marquis (1-1, 2.41) will throw for San Diego.
