Chase Headley returns Wednesday while Cameron Maybin goes to the disabled list

Chase Headley has been taken off of the disabled list and replaced there by Cameron Maybin

Chase Headley has returned to the San Diego Padres as of Wednesday, and is in the starting lineup for the 7:10 PM game. Chase will bat third and play third base Wednesday evening, with Jedd Gyorko going back to second base after doing most of the work at the hot corner in Headley’s absence.

The corresponding move on the 25-man roster (technically at 24 until Carlos Quentin comes off of his 8-game suspension for causing the brawl on April 9th), is Cameron Maybin being placed on the 15-day disabled list with a sore right wrist. Maybin has had previous issues with the wrist, and the severity of the injury isn’t known at this time. The official press release calls it a “right wrist impingement”.

For Headley, his return comes exactly one month to the day from when he broke the tip of his left thumb, an injury that had a prognosis of 4-6 weeks recovery time. Headley had spent several games playing for the Lake Elsinore Storm, the Padres High-A minor league affiliate, in the last week of his rehab.

Headley, 28, won the Gold Glove Award and the Silver Slugger Award last season for being the best fielder and hitter at his position in the National League, respectively. He led the National League in runs batted in, hit .286 for the season, and had 31 home runs.

Maybin, 26, was hitting just .091 and had been playing sparingly as of late. Cameron has started only 10 of the 14 games played by the Padres this season.

Wednesday evening’s lineup for the Padres: 1 - Chris Denorfia CF, 2 – Everth Cabrera SS, 3 – Chase Headley 3B, 4 – Jesus Guzman LF, 5 - Yonder Alonso 1B, 6 – Jedd Gyorko 2B, 7 – Kyle Blanks RF, 8 – Nick Hundley C, 9 – Tyson Ross P

For the Dodgers, Jerry Hairston, Jr. will sit out the game while serving the one game suspension handed down by the Commissioner’s Office for his part in the brawl between the Dodgers and Padres at Petco back on April 9th. In addition, center fielder Matt Kemp is not in the starting lineup.

According to a tweet from Bill Shakin of the Los Angeles Times, Kemp said, "There's nothing wrong with me. Everything is fine. It's just hitting, man. I just need to hit. That's it."

Kemp is hitting just .188 on the season. Skip Schumaker has been penciled into the lineup Wednesday to play center field in Kemp’s place.
