Padres get pounded by Rockies

The Rockies blasted the Padres on Saturday after Chase Headley receives Silver Slugger and Gold Glove awards before the game

It hasn’t been easy with Edinson Volquez on the mound this season, and Saturday at Petco Park against the Colorado Rockies was no exception. Not to mention that the bats haven’t been consistent throughout the line-up, nor is the fielding particularly crisp.

On a day when last year’s Padres third baseman, Chase Headley, received his Gold Glove award, the player in that spot on Saturday in his stead committed two errors in the same inning. Last year’s National League stolen base leader decided to steal third base with two outs, and got mowed down in the process.

The Padres are scuffling, no doubt about that. And on Saturday, the Colorado Rockies were looking to take the fifth straight game this season from the Padres, and the Padres made it easy for them.

In the top of the first inning, Edinson Volquez walked leadoff man Dexter Fowler, but Josh Rutledge ground into a fielder’s choice, erasing Fowler at second base. Rutledge stole second base, but Volquez struck out Carlos Gonzalez for the second out.

Volquez had Troy Tulowitzki two balls and two strikes when Tulowitzki smacked a changeup down the left field line, plating Rutledge. After half an inning, the Rockies led 1-0 before the Padres even came to the plate.

In the bottom of the first inning with Jhoulys Chacin pitching for the Rockies, Everth Cabrera opened the frame with a lead-off triple into the gap in left-center field. Chris Denorfia struck out, but Yonder Alonso hit a deep fly to left field and Cabrera easily scored on the sacrifice, and the score was tied 1-1 after an inning.

The Rockies went back on top in the second inning. Todd Helton reached on an error by Padres third baseman Jesus Guzman (his first of two errors in the inning) and then Willin Rosario hit a home run to left-center and the Rockies led 3-1.

The third inning was also fruitful for Colorado, when Carlos Gonzalez led off with a walk and then stole second base. An out later, a Michael Cuddyer ground out moved Gonzalez to third, and a double by Todd Helton drove in Gonzalez.

Willin Rosario then singled to center scoring Todd Helton, and the Rockies were out in front of the Padres 5-1 after just two and a half innings. In three innings of work, Volquez had already thrown 81 pitches.

Will Venable led off the bottom of the third inning with a double, and after Volquez struck out trying to sacrifice Venable to third, but Everth Cabrera came through with a single to plate Venable. Chris Denoria then singled with Cabrera taking second, but Yonder Alonso flew out and then Cabrera was thrown out as he inexplicably tried to steal third base down by three runs with two outs.

All the Padres could manage was one run, and after three innings the Rockies led 5-2, but the Rockies weren’t nearly finished. In the top of the fourth inning, Jesus Guzman went out to left field to spell Kotsay, who was reportedly not feeling well prior to the game, and Gyorko took over at third while Alexi Amarista came in to play second base.

With one out, Volquez walked Jeff Rutledge, and then Rutledge stole second base. Carlos Gonzalez doubled home Rutledge, and that was all for Edinson Volquez who went three and one third innings and gave up seven runs (six earned) on six hits with three walks to go along with four strike outs using 96 pitches to get there.

Thad Weber came in and retired Troy Tulowitzki, but gave up a bomb to Carlos Gonzalez that landed in the second deck in left field. At the end of three and a half innings, the Rockies had blown it open and led the Padres 8-2.

The Rockies added on in the sixth inning, when Dexter Fowler walked to open the frame and a ground ball by Jeff Rutledge forced Fowler at second. With one out, Carlos Gonzalez singled, moving Rutledge to third base and a sacrifice fly by Troy Tulowitzki brought home Rutledge and the Rockies increased their lead to 9-2 over the Padres.

In the bottom of the seventh inning with one out, Will Venable gave the fans something to cheer about when he deposited a Edgmer Escalona fastball into the Petco Porch in right field. One out later, Everth Cabrera followed with a shot over the left-center field wall, and the Padres cut the deficit to 9-4 after seven innings.

In the bottom of the eighth inning, the Padres edged closer. Yonder Alonso opened with a single, and Jesus Guzman drew a walk off of Rockies reliever Matt Belisle.

Alexi Amarista doubled down the left field line, bringing home Alonso and sending Guzman to third, still with no outs. Jedd Gyorko lifted a shallow fly ball to right field, and Carlos Quentin pinch-hit and popped out behind the plate.

Will Venable then struck out. The Padres had runners on second and third base with no one out and left them stranded there, and the score after eight innings was 9-5 in favor of the Rockies.

That was the way it ended, the Rockies taking the fifth straight against the Padres. The Padres are 2-9 on the season, the Rockies improve to 7-4.

Notes:

Sunday, Clayton Richard (0-1, 8.68) will try to right the ship for the Padres against Jorge De La Rosa (0-1, 6.10) for the Rockies. Game time is 1:10 PM PDST and 1090 AM will broadcast the radio version with Fox Sports San Diego doing the visual.
