When Chase Headley came up, the Padres organization didn't think much of his skills at third base. In fact, after a small cup of coffee in 2007, he played in a little over half of the games in the 2008 season, 82 games in left field and only seven games at third base giving an occasional rest to then-third baseman for the Padres, Kevin Kouzmanoff.
In 2009, Chase played 114 games in left field and only 28 at third base, but in the off-season Headley inherited third base from Kouzmanoff after Kevin was traded to the Oakland Athletics. Headley improved his defense in the next three seasons until it paid off with a National League Rawlings Gold Glove in the 2012 season.
“This is a well-deserved recognition of Chase’s work at third base. To be voted as a Gold Glove winner by managers and coaches is a tremendous honor. We are all proud of Chase’s accomplishments and the all-around player he has become,” Padres Manager Buddy Black stated according to a Padres press release.
Kouzmanoff, who has played for a total of five organizations up to now, has never won a Gold Glove but was considered an excellent third baseman while with the Padres. Headley, 28 years old, finished the 2012 season with only 10 errors in 425 chances for a fielding percentage of .976 on the year
The Gold Glove for Chase makes him the 10th player in Padres franchise history to win the award, and the 2nd third baseman to take the trophy behind Ken Caminiti, who won it a total of three times. Headley is again arbitration eligible this season and the Padres are expected to offer it.
Notes:
The Arizona Fall League is underway and the Rising Stars Game roster has been announced. Padres prospects Kevin Quackenbush (relief pitcher/closer) and Rymer Liriano (outfielder) have been selected to represent for the Padres organization. Select Padres players are part of the Peoria Javelinas, along with players from Cincinnati Reds, Philadelphia Phillies, Minnesota Twins, and Seattle Mariners organizations. The league is competitive but considered instructional in nature. Congrats to both players, highly regarded prospects in the Padres organization.
