Matt Shrigley is a local freshman from La Costa Canyon High School. Last year, he led his high school team to a 35-3 record and CIF Division II Finals. Shrigley is a 6’7” forward who has already shown his ability from behind the arc, making 42% of his three point attempts this season for the Aztecs.
Roderick Rowan, a red shirt walk-on sitting out due to NCAA rules, had this to say about Shepard: “His game is pretty much identical to Dwayne Polee. He is a 6’7” wing that can shoot and is freakishly athletic. I remember playing against him for the first time when he was a 9th grader and I was. As a freshman he already had basketball IQ of a senior and was pretty athletic.”
Shrigley has averaged 15 minutes a game so far during the exhibition season. Coach Steve Fisher has noted the amount of quality depth he has this season due in large part to freshman and transfer players like Shrigley. It is still possible for Shrigley to decide to redshirt this year, as Coach Fisher stated during an 11/6 press conference “We have not spoken with anyone, as we speak, about redshirting.”
