SDSU hosted Cal State University San Marcos on Thursday night at Viejas Arena. It was only an exhibition game, but it was a great opportunity to see the Aztec freshman and transfers out on the court. Coach Steve Fisher cycled his players in and out of the game at a high pace, maximizing his opportunity to see different players playing together. Despite a slow start and tied score at half time, the Aztecs won 67-46.
Game Notes:
For being an exhibition game against a small school, attendance was strong. While it was not a sell out, it seemed three quarters full from a fans perspective. The student section was full and as boisterous as ever.
It was very evident that this was the Aztecs first game of the season. They committed 22 turnovers. I counted more than 10 dropped or fumbled passes that should have been caught. They passed around the three point line and didn’t penetrate or pass into the key until the second half. They missed poorly on several alley-oop attempts. At times it seemed that Jamaal Franklin was forcing the issue instead of relying on his teammates. They only made 5-19 three point attempts, a mere 26.3%.
The raw skill is apparent, especially on defense. It seemed as if every other shot attempt by San Marcos was significantly altered or blocked all together. They clogged the passing lanes and forced San Marcos into bad shots late in the shot clock. Chase Tapley knocked down open shot after open shot. DeShawn Stephens fought his way down low for several thunderous dunks.
The transfers and freshman are everything Aztec fans have hoped for. Winston Shepard has very raw talent. He has great athleticism and is a phenomenal passer. JJ O’Brien is a force down low and should be able to work his way into the starting lineup immediately. Dwayne Polee II looks very polished and comfortable out on the floor.
