Extra Innings Don't Go Padres Way, Marlins Win In 12

Yonder Alonso (pictured) has a sweet swing, that much has been obvious since his college playing days at the University of Miami. Fitting that swing into a ballpark like Petco is what a lot of people have been waiting for. If Friday night was any indication, that swing appears to have found a home.

Alonso went 4 for 7 with a pair of doubles, as part of a 15-hit Padres attack that fell just short. The Padres lost to the Miami Marlins, 9-8, in a wild game that went 12 innings.

In the first inning, the Marlins roughed up Padres pitcher Anthony Bass for 5 runs. Jose Reyes singled and Emilio Bonifacio walked, then Hanley Ramirez hit a Bass fastball over the left center field wall for a 3-run home run. After Greg Dobbs grounded out, Omar Infante hit an infield single and then Gioncarlo Stanton drove a change-up over the center field wall for a 2-run shot, and the Marlins led 5-0 before the Padres ever had an at-bat.

The Padres loaded the bases against Marlins starter Josh Johnson in the bottom of the first inning. With one out, Mark Kotsay lined a single to left, Chase Headley was hit by a Johnson slider, and then Yonder Alonso singled sharply to left field, and the bases were full with only one out. Nick Hundley hit a fly to shallow center field and Orlando Hudson struck out looking, and that ended the threat.

The bottom of the third inning was wildly prolific for the Padres, and just plain wild for Josh Johnson. Will Venable led off the inning with a walk, and Mark Kotsay popped out. Chase Headley doubled to left, scoring Venable. Yonder Alonso then grounded out, moving Headley to third base with two outs.

That's when it all unraveled for Johnson and the Padres took advantage of it. Nick Hundley doubled to left field, scoring Headley, and Orlando Hudson followed with a single, scoring Headley. After Hudson stole second base, Johnson walked Cameron Maybin and then Jason Bartlett to load the bases.

Anthony Bass then tripled, the first major league hit of his career, clearing the bases. Marlins manager Ozzie Guillen then removed Johnson, but the damage was done, and the Padres were up 6-5 after three innings.

The Marlins got even in the top of the fourth. Jose Reyes doubled off of Anthony Bass with one out, and a Bonifacio ground ball moved Reyes to third. Bass was then called for a balk, scoring Reyes.

The Padres then went back on top in the bottom of the fifth inning. With two outs, Bass and Venable singled, and then Kotsay singled to plate Bass. After five innings the Padres led, 7-6.

Then in the top of the seventh inning, the Marlins took the lead back. With two outs and Emilio Bonifacio on second base, reliever Luke Gregerson gave up a single to right field by Greg Dobbs to tie the score. Dobbs then took second on the late throw home.

Andrew Cashner then relieved Gregerson. Omar Infante then singled and Dobbs scored to make it 8-7 Marlins.

The Padres waited until the bottom of the ninth to tie it up. With former Padres closer Heath Bell on the mound for the Marlins, Jesus Guzman doubled to lead of the inning and Cameron Maybin doubled home Guzman and it was 8-8 after 9 innings.

In the top of the twelfth inning, with Josh Spence pitching for the Padres, Hanley Ramirez walked, and one out later, Omar Infante doubled home Ramirez for what turned out to be the winning run.

Notes:

Padres closer Huston Street left Friday's game with a shoulder problem and will be examined by team doctors on Saturday. Tim Stauffer, on the disabled list but rehabbing in Tucson, pitched a 5-inning outing there and no issues were reported. Stauffer is expected to get one more start in the minors and if no issues arise then he would join the Padres afterward.

Saturday, the Padres face the Marlins, it will be the Padres Clayton Richard facing Mark Buehrle of the Marlins. First pitch is at 5:35 and the Padres are giving away t-shirts or something. Fox Sports San Diego if you have plenty of t-shirts already and XX1090 AM if you have t-shirts and Time Warner Cable.
