Padres Draft Pitching and Infielders

Through the first 15 rounds of the 2012 Major League Baseball first-year player draft, the San Diego Padres selected eight pitchers and six infielders with their 19 picks, including compensation picks for players lost through free agency in 2011. Also selected were four outfielders and a catcher.

With their first-round pick, seventh overall, the Padres took left-handed pitcher Max Fried. Fried is listed at 6' 4", 170 lbs., and attended Harvard-Westlake high school in the Los Angeles area. He has a good fastball with velocity up to 92 miles per hour and an excellent curve ball that has downward movement. Max will need to develop a change-up in order to have a pitch to offset the fastball.

In the compensation round, the Padres drafted right-handed pitcher Zach Eflin out of Hagerty high school in Florida, center fielder Travis Jankowski from Stony Brook University in New York, and right-handed pitcher Walker Weickel of Olympia high school in Florida.

The 6' 5" Eflin commands a 95 miles per hour fastball and a good breaking ball, but like Fried, he needs to develop a change up. Jankowski is a 6' 3" center fielder who bats left-handed; he doesn't have much power but he hits well for average and steals bases and could be a legitimate lead-off hitter. Weickel, 6' 6", is a right-handed pitcher with a 95 miles per hour fastball and a decent change up, but his curve ball needs work.

The compensation picks, including one extra in the second round, were awarded to the Padres because Heath Bell and Aaron Harang were lost to free agency, and one of last year's draft picks, Brett Austin, chose not to sign with the Padres. With the two picks in the second round, the Padres chose Jeremy Baltz from St. Johns University and Dane Phillips from Oklahoma City University.

Baltz, a 6' 3" right-handed hitting outfielder, reminds some scouts of a young Pat Burrell. Although he might not have the power often associated with the corner outfield spots, his bat produces a lot of doubles and he drove in 60 runs for St. Johns. Phillips is a 6' 1" catcher, a solid left-handed hitter with some power but will need a lot of work behind the plate to improve his defensive skills.

In the third round the Padres drafted 6' 2" Fernando Perez from Chula Vista. Perez skipped his senior year of high school to attend Central Arizona College, a junior college. While playing third base, the left-handed Perez hit .341 and drove in 51 runs. The Padres drafted him as a short stop.

Rounds 16 through 40 of the draft concludes tomorrow, beginning at 9:00 AM PDST.
