Hornets cruise to victory over Buccaneers in balanced fashion
PACIFIC BEACH – Four days after suffering its first loss to a San Diego opponent in two seasons, Lincoln started a new section streak on Tuesday night. The fourth-ranked Hornets routed 10th-ranked Mission Bay 78-64 to move into second place after the first round of Western League play.
“At practice yesterday we really took the time out to play hard, practice hard, and complete with each other instead of having a lackadaisical practice and then coming out flat the next day at the game. The key was practice,” said Lincoln junior forward Jeremiah Turner.
Lincoln (12-8, 5-1 Western) started fast and had a 22-11 lead after the first quarter. Junior guard Tyrell Robinson scored 10 points in the opening quarter as the Hornets jumped on Mission Bay (11-5, 4-2) from the outset.
“We expected them to come out harder than what they came out at, but once we saw that they were flat we just had to take advantage and step on the gas,” Turner said. “We came out strong on defense and that really sparked us on offense.”
Lincoln led by 15 at halftime and held a 24-point advantage after closing the third quarter on a 12-4 run. The Hornets led by at least 20 points for most of the final quarter, and wrapped up the first round of league action with a comfortable road victory over Mission Bay.
“This is a turning point in our season and this is a really big win,” Turner said.
Junior guard Tyree Robinson scored 22 points to lead Lincoln, and was one of four Hornets in double figures. Each of Lincoln’s starters scored at least eight points as transition offense led to a balanced attack.
“Tonight we were trying to expose our mismatches, just let people know that there are multiple scorers on the team – not just the twins,” Turner said. “We have multiple people that can contribute to the win.”
Turner scored 12 points, including 10 in the second half. As the third offensive option behind the Robinson twins, the 6-foot-7 transfer from Morse focuses primarily on defense and looks to create mismatches inside on the offensive end.
“I really just set an inside force so when dudes want to drive in, no lanes are open,” Turner said. “On offense, I just want to come around when the lanes are open and knock down open shots in the 15-foot mid-range area.”
For Mission Bay, senior guard Jerald Albritton scored a game-high 26 points. The Buccaneers had a three-game winning streak snapped.
