Mavericks win at Torrey Pines for first time since 2007-08 season
CARMEL VALLEY – Torrey Pines and La Costa Canyon renewed the section’s best basketball rivalry on Friday night – and the top-ranked Mavericks earned bragging rights for the entire season. La Costa Canyon pulled away late for a 51-38 win over Torrey Pines, its first victory on the Falcons’ home court in four seasons.
“It’s crazy to play here. The fans are so great on both sides and you can hear them all game,” said La Costa Canyon senior guard David Travers. “It’s such a rivalry game and it’s a big deal – it’s definitely a great win for us.”
La Costa Canyon (16-1) led 8-6 after a defensive first quarter, and the Mavericks closed the second quarter on an 11-2 run to take a 26-15 halftime lead. Throughout the game, points were hard to come by for both teams.
“You have to work just to get open,” Travers said. “Both teams know each other so well and both sides know each other’s plays – it comes down to who steps up and who makes plays.”
In the third quarter, La Costa Canyon led by as much as nine until Torrey Pines (8-7) fought back into the game. The Falcons scored the last five points of the third quarter and the first four points of the fourth, tying the game at 34 on a Garrett Galvin jumper with 6:40 remaining.
“Garrett and Joe (Rahon) went on a run and I just looked at (my teammates) and said ‘Let’s go.’ We just got out in transition,” Travers said.
Instead of a drama-filled finish, La Costa Canyon responded to the Falcons’ push by scoring 15 consecutive points to definitively pull away from the hosts. Travers sparked the run by scoring six straight points to break the fourth-quarter tie.
“The biggest difference was transition – all of my points were in transition and coming off screens when they couldn’t set up their defense,” Travers said. “I was thinking let’s get a quick attack because they play such good defense – I tried to get a quick hitter.”
With 1:50 left, Mavericks junior guard Jeff Van Dyke capped the run with a three-pointer – his fifth of the game – to give La Costa Canyon a commanding 49-34 lead. The Mavericks held Torrey Pines scoreless for a five-minute stretch while they pulled away for the 13-point victory.
“To come into Torrey Pines and get a good-sized victory over them and really step it up in the second half and execute – it means a lot going down the line if we have to play at somebody else’s house in the playoffs,” Travers said.
Travers scored nine of his 13 points in the fourth quarter, and Van Dyke led La Costa Canyon with a game-high 17 points. Senior forward Matt Shrigley added 10 for the Mavericks, who had lost their last three games at Torrey Pines High.
“We knew it was going to be a challenge from the start, because of the atmosphere and we’re playing in their house,” Travers said.
Galvin led Torrey Pines with 15 points, including 11 in the second half. The game was played before a packed gym, with both student sections going back and forth from before tipoff through the final buzzer.
“When you are on the floor you don’t necessarily hear everything, but there are definitely chants going back and forth and people are trying to talk to you on the sidelines. It’s crazy,” Travers said.
It’s not crazy – it’s just what the best current hoops rivalry in San Diego looks like.
