While defending Division I champion Poway’s move to Division II has grabbed the attention of most of the section, two other teams changing divisions could have just as big of an impact as the Titans in 2012.
None of 12 teams that moved divisions become as heavy of a favorite as Mission Hills did when they moved to Division I. The Grizzlies’ move up coinciding with Poway dropping to Division II establishes them as a favorite in a wide-open division. While in Division II the past three seasons Mission Hills was eliminated by either eventual champion Oceanside or Helix, teams that aren’t in the way this season with the loaded Grizzlies in Division I.
In each of the past three seasons, St. Augustine has won nine games but had its season ended in the postseason short of the Division III finals. Since winning back-to-back Division III titles in the 2005 and 2006 seasons, the Saints haven’t appeared in the championship game. Typically opting to play up a division, St. Augustine is staying in Division IV this season and immediately joins Valley Center and Madison as a favorite within the division.
