Reds and Cueto Too Much For Padres

Getting into a deep hole against Reds starter Johnny Cueto isn’t advisable, as the Padres found out on Thursday. Padres starter Ross Ohlendorf didn’t get out of the second inning, putting up six runs in the frame, and the Reds rolled San Diego, 9-4.

The Reds started it in the bottom of the second, and for all practical purposes, they ended it there. Scott Rolen began the frame with a single, and Todd Frazier followed with his thirteenth home run of the season to make it 2-0, Reds.

This was followed by consecutive singles from the bats of Zack Cozart and Miguel Cairo, and then Ryan Hannigan doubled to plate Cozart and put Cairo at third base. Ohlendorf then struck out Johnny Cueto and Xavier Paul to try and limit the damage, but then walked Drew Stubbs to load the bases.

Jay Bruce singled scoring Cairo and Hannigan, with Stubbs taking third base. An Ohlendorf balk then advanced both runners, Stubbs scoring and Bruce advancing to second. Ohlendorf walked Rolen and Frazier to load the bases, and was pulled in favor of Eric Stults.

Stults got Cozart to pop out, but the damage was too much. After just two innings, the Reds led 6-0, leaving the Padres with too much work to get to Cueto.

The Padres rallied in the top of the third inning. With one out, Eddy Rodriguez got his first hit in his first at-bat in the majors, a home run to left field. Eric Stults and Alexi Amarista hit back-to-back singles, bringing up Chase Headley. Headley hit a sharp ground ball to shortstop that took a tricky hop and went into center field for a single, scoring Stults and Amarista, and the Padres cut the Reds lead in half to 6-3.

In the top of the fourth inning, the Padres added another run. Cameron Maybin took Cueto deep into the left-center field seats, and the Reds led 6-4. But that was as close as the Padres would get.

The Reds added on in the bottom of the fourth, beginning with a throwing error by Chase Headley that allowed Drew Stubbs to reach second base. After Jay Bruce walked and Stubbs stole third base, Scott Rolen singled off of Headley’s glove and Drew Stubbs scored.

Stults got Todd Frazier to hit a ground ball to shortstop, Rolen out at second base while advancing Bruce to third. Zack Cozart then singled to left field, scoring Bruce, and the Reds took a 8-4 lead.

Cueto pitched into the eighth inning with little trouble, giving way to Reds relievers Logan Ondrusek and then Jose Arredondo, and the Padres couldn’t threaten. The Reds added a run in the bottom of the eighth inning against Padres reliever Brad Brach to make the final score 9-4 for Cincinnati.

Johnny Cueto moved to 14-5 while Ross Ohlendorf fell to 2-3. The Reds are now 64-41 as the Padres dip to 44-63 on the season.

Notes:

Eddy Rodriguez was an interesting choice to call up to take the place of the injured Yasmani Grandal on the 25-man roster. Coincidentally, Rodriguez was drafted by the Cincinnati Reds in 2006 and spent three years in their organization into 2008. In 2011, he joined the Padres, and spent all of 2012 in single-A Lake Elsinore, where he hit .223 with 13 home runs (career minor league high) against 100 strike outs; not exactly impressive numbers at that level. Perhaps the Padres organization sees something in Rodriguez beyond the numbers.

Friday, the Padres are home to host the New York Mets. The Padres are sending Clayton Richard (7-11, 4.14) to the mound to face Mets ace R.A. Dickey (14-2, 2.83). Game time is at 7:05 PM PDST and can be heard on XX 1090 AM or seen on Fox Sports San Diego where you can reel it in. Time Warner and AT&T U-verse customers can use the savings given by their providers for not carrying Padres games and pony up for tickets to come to Petco Park.
