Santa Fe Christian Drops Palo Verde Valley in Dominant Fashion

SOLANA BEACH – For the second straight week, Santa Fe Christian sent an opponent crashing from the unbeaten ranks. The Eagles scored six touchdowns in the first half and crushed visiting Palo Verde Valley 48-0 on Saturday afternoon.

“We prepared better a lot this week than we had previously, so I actually thought it was going to be a blowout,” said Santa Fe Christian senior Connor Moore.

In the first quarter, Moore found the end zone on both offense and defense. At defensive back Moore intercepted a Ryan Galvan pass and returned it 48 yards for a score, the first of two interceptions for scores on consecutive Palo Verde Valley (2-1) drives.

“Coach (Dan) Egan had the scout team running those plays all week, so I read that pretty well and he threw the ball right to me,” Moore said.

Late in the first quarter, Moore scored on a 2-yard quarterback keeper that put Santa Fe Christian (3-1) ahead 21-0. The Eagles turned a fast start into a blowout in the second quarter with touchdowns from running backs Jarrod Watson-Lewis (50 yards) and Tony Miro (23 yards) on the ground, and Moore finding Watson-Lewis for a 23 yard score just before halftime for a decisive 42-0 lead.

“We have everything on offense, it is just about us finally clicking,” Moore said. “It took a couple of weeks for our offense to get going and I think we’re there now.”

Santa Fe Christian outgained Palo Verde Valley 271-64 in a dominant first half. The Eagles added one more touchdown in the second half and shut out the visitors from Blythe, a town located hours east on the California-Arizona border.

“I tip my hat to Palo Verde Valley,” said Santa Fe Christian head coach Nick Ruscetta. “That’s a tough deal to drive five hours to come out and play us.”

Since losing 21-0 to undefeated Westview in its season opener, Santa Fe Christian has won three straight. The Eagles have looked increasingly impressive each week, and earned their most convincing victory of the season against Palo Verde Valley.

“That’s why we play the nonleague schedule we do,” Egan said. “The Coastal League has gotten really competitive, so we try to play the best schedule we can so that going into league we are battle-tested.”
