Otay Ranch Plays Fast to Take Down Mission Bay

PACIFIC BEACH – In its quick set offense, Otay Ranch never slowed down against Mission Bay. The Mustangs scored 28 unanswered points after halftime on the way to a decisive 49-13 victory over the host Buccaneers on Friday afternoon.

“We hurry up to the line to where they can’t adjust to what we’re doing , and we try to keep the game tempo as fast as possible,” said Otay Ranch quarterback Cody Springsguth. “They have to play our game.”

Both teams traded touchdowns in the first quarter, and Otay Ranch (2-1) took a 14-6 lead early in the second on a David Mondy 10-yard touchdown run. Mission Bay (1-2) fumbled on the next drive and the Mustangs needed only one play to extend their lead, scoring on a 78-yard touchdown pass from Springsguth to receiver Chris Martin to make it 21-6.

“That was all my receiver,” Springsguth said. “I put the ball where he could get it and he just went with it.”

Late in the second quarter, Mission Bay quarterback Nate Long ran for his second touchdown of the first half to make it a one-possession game at halftime. In the second half, Otay Ranch kept rolling offensively and tightened up defensively to make it a one-sided contest.

“We just had a really good week of practice, and we watched film every day during lunch,” Srpingsguth said.

After stopping Mission Bay on the opening drive of the third quarter, Otay Ranch extended its lead to 28-13 on a Deodrick Cunningham 20-yard touchdown run. The Mustangs added to their lead later in the quarter with a 10-yard touchdown pass from Springsguth to Martin.

“We have really quick receivers, really good running backs and all it is is deciding where we want to put the ball and where we want to score from,” Springsguth said. “No defense can key on just one player – it’s pick your poison with us.”

Early in the fourth quarter, Springsguth connected with Mondy for a 10-yard touchdown to give Otay Ranch a 42-13 lead. The Mustangs added another touchdown before time ran out, and kept Mission Bay scoreless in the second half.

“In the second half we made some adjustments and the defense came out and played tremendously,” said Otay Ranch head coach Anthony Lacsina. “We tackled better, we played our assignments better, and they did what they were coached to do during the week.”

After losing its opener to Elsinore, Otay Ranch has beaten Serra and Mission Bay by an average of 35 points. The Mustangs’ goal is simple this season – to improve from one game to the next.

“Each game we’re just working on getting that perfect game – minimizing mistakes and getting to where we’re perfect,” Springsguth said.
