Week 2 High Five

Game of the Week

#10 Poway (1-0) at #6 La Costa Canyon (1-0) Friday 7 p.m.

The Game of the Week on a Friday loaded with three Top 10 contests features two teams with talent and legitimate section title aspirations. Last week neither La Costa Canyon nor Poway disappointed, rolling up convincing victories in their openers behind strong rushing attacks. Both teams have talent and experience across the field; which team can keep in rolling early? La Costa Canyon won last year’s meeting between these two teams 24-7.

Best of the Rest

#5 Cathedral Catholic (1-0) at #4 Torrey Pines (1-0) Friday 7 p.m.

The battle for Del Mar Heights Road is being waged for the third year in a row, with the road team winning each of the past two games. Both Cathedral Catholic and Torrey Pines delivered convincing wins in their openers — the Dons beat Steele Canyon 27-7 and the Falcons crushed Colton 35-7 — and will be looking to stay undefeated. No extra motivation will be needed for these rivals whose schools are separated by only two miles.

#9 Mount Miguel (1-0) at Valhalla (1-0) Friday 7 p.m.

After East County leagues switched two seasons ago, Mount Miguel and Valhalla kept each other on the preseason schedule last year and the Matadors eked out a 13-12 win. These teams have split each of their last six matchups, with five of those matchups decided by eight points or less. This game features two of the most experienced quarterbacks in the section — Mount Miguel’s Ernest Williams and Valhalla’s Frank Foster.

#3 Helix (0-1) at #7 Vista (0-1) Friday 7 p.m.

This Top 10 matchup features two teams looking to bounce back from season-opening losses at home. In Week 1, Helix started too slow against Eastlake while Vista couldn’t finish against Punahou. The Highlanders make the trip up to North County to face the defending Division I champion Panthers with neither team wanting to start the season off 0-2. Expect a physical, defensive game in these teams’ first meeting since 2003.

San Pasqual (1-0) at Rancho Bernardo (1-0) Friday 7 p.m.

For the first time in six seasons San Pasqual has opened the season with a win, and the Eagles will be looking to build off a convincing 28-7 victory over Valley Center in its opener. San Pasqual travels eight miles south to face Rancho Bernardo, who snuck by Del Norte 35-30 to open the season. The Broncos have won the last two between these teams; can the Eagles end the streak?

In the Red Zone

Lincoln (0-0) at Point Loma (1-0) Saturday 3 p.m.

The Red Zone Saturday pick features two city schools squaring off in Point Loma. Lincoln will open its season Saturday, while Point Loma will look to make it two straight after beating Orange Glen last week. Since Lincoln reopened four years ago, the Pointers and Hornets have met only once — a 25-20 Lincoln win in 2007.
