Breakdown
Favorite (1) Santa Fe Christian
The Coastal League champion has gone on to win the Division V title in each of the past four seasons, and in the regular Santa Fe Christian ran the table in the small school league with an average margin of victory of 33.6 points. Led by senior quarterback/safety Connor Moore, the complete Eagles can run and pass out of the Wing-T, and are stout defensively. Santa Fe Christian’s move down to Division V comes at the expense of the rest of the division.
Sleeper (5) La Jolla Country Day
La Jolla Country Day didn’t fare so well in its first season in the Coastal League, but the Torreys went 5-0 in the preseason and are better than a 1-4 league mark suggests. And if La Jolla Country Day beats San Pasqual Academy in the first round, they get a second look at their league rivals.
Star Watch QB Shane Dillon, Christian, Sr.
Dillon is the top quarterback recruit in the section, and the 6’6” right-hander has carved up opposing defenses all season long. A prototypical drop-back passer verbally committed to Colorado, Dillon has thrown for 2,510 yards and 18 touchdowns for the Patriots.
Early Upset (11) Army-Navy over (6) Holtville
Holtville earned a home game by capturing the Manzanita League championship, but the Vikings (8-2) only played one game against San Diego competition. If Army-Navy can endure the 150-mile trip east, they have a chance to pull the upset. These two teams met in the first round last season and Holtville notched a narrow 28-22 win.
Potential Matchup to See Finals – (1) Santa Fe Christian vs (2) Christian
If the bracket holds true, the best of the Coastal League would be on a collision course to meet in the finals at Southwestern College. Santa Fe Christian won a 48-34 shootout in the regular season meeting, and a finals matchup would between the sister schools would be an entertaining encounter.
