Torrey Pines Rolls Past Dominguez in National Division Opener

Big second quarter propels Falcons past Dons in 12-point win

CARMEL VALLEY – Plagued by a sluggish start in its loss to Cathedral Catholic on Monday, Torrey Pines succeeded in starting quickly against Compton Dominguez in its Holiday Classic National Division opener Tuesday afternoon. The Falcons played solid defense and sped past the Dons in the second quarter en route to a 67-55 victory.

“These guys are so talented that you can’t start slow or they will beat you up,” said Torrey Pines guard Garrett Galvin. “We made it a point not to start off slow, attack from the get go and not repeat any mistakes that we had last night.”

Torrey Pines (8-3) led 13-11 after the first quarter and opened up a double-digit lead with a 13-3 run to start the second quarter. The Falcons’ man-to-man defense led to transition baskets, as they scored 24 points in the quarter – 12 from Galvin – and had a 37-24 halftime lead.

“In the second quarter, I realized I could get to the basket if I wanted,” Galvin said. “I started to loosen up and try to find my shot.”

Torrey Pines scored the first five points of the third quarter and Dominguez (3-7) trailed by at least 11 points for the rest of the game. The Falcons kept the Dons at a distance in the second half with solid defensive and offensive execution.

“We all did a good job staying poised, working our offense, and letting it do the work,” Galvin said.

Galvin led Torrey Pines with a game-high 26 points, and senior guard Joe Rahon scored 22 points. The backcourt duo helped the Falcons play at a fast pace against Dominguez throughout the game.

“Joe does a great job pushing the ball, and I can handle the ball and run,” Galvin said. “We can run a lot and we get a lot of open shots in transition.”

Dominguez had three players finish in double figures led by forward Arnold Anderson (20 points). With the victory, Torrey Pines advances to the second round of the National Division to play Woodland Hills Taft (9-1) tomorrow at 5:25 p.m.

“They look pretty good,” Galvin said. “We’re going to do all we can, be smart and play poised.”
