No. 2 Hornets beat No. 8 Army-Navy to claim National Division spot

CARMEL VALLEY – Six of the section’s top teams tipped off the Torrey Pines Holiday Classic on Monday night, including top-ranked La Costa Canyon and second-ranked Lincoln. In the showcase game of the tournament’s opening night, the Hornets made their San Diego debut with a 76-53 win over eighth-ranked Army-Navy to earn the final spot in the National Division bracket.

“We were just so excited to play our first game at home – we had all our fans come and support us,” said Lincoln guard Tyree Robinson. “When we have the crowd on our side, I think there’s no stopping us.”

Tyree Robinson and twin brother Tyrell Robinson combined to score two-thirds of Lincoln’s total – Tyree scored a game-high 28 points and Tyrell added 24. After opening with an 11-2 run, Lincoln (3-2) kept Army-Navy (8-2) at a double-digit distance before putting the game out of reach in the fourth quarter.

“We knew it was going to be a fight, but we have been practicing really hard and we came out with the win,” Tyree Robinson said.

Sophomore guard Devin Watson led Army-Navy with 23 points and forward Jhoan Camacho added 10. The Warriors were playing without 7-foot-1 center Cheikh Ndiaye, who is still recovering from a concussion he sustained last month, and play in the American Division against Curtis (Wash.) (4-3) tomorrow at 5:55 p.m.

Lincoln advances to the National Division where they will meet DeMatha (Md.) (5-0) tomorrow night at Torrey Pines High at 7:30 p.m. The Stags boast three Division I recruits and are currently ranked sixth in the nation by MaxPreps.

“We can’t get big-headed because we have a tough opponent tomorrow. We just have to come out and battle,” Tyree Robinson said. “We’re ready and we like the challenge.”

The Hornets face a challenge this season after graduating 10 seniors from last year’s state regional semifinalist. Lincoln head coach Jason Bryant said the 2011-12 Hornets do not have as much athleticism as the teams that went a combined 60-4 over the past two seasons and won back-to-back Division II titles.

“We’re not as deep as we were last year or the year before. We’re more of a half court team than an open court team,” Bryant said. “Defensively I think we’re still solid – we just have to make sure offensively we’re disciplined and that we trust in our offense.”

Junior transfers Fred Melifonwu (Carson) and Jeremiah Turner (Morse) are expected to make an immediate impact in Lincoln’s reshuffled lineup. After playing complementary roles for the Hornets each of past two seasons, the 6-foot-3 Robinsons are now the leaders of the program.

“Our team is really young, which means my brother and I have to work harder than we did our freshman year,” Tyree Robinson said. “We went on that state run, we’ve been undefeated for a long time and now it’s time to make these little dudes grow up and hopefully they understand it.”

Lincoln – 76 (19-17-15-25)

Tyree Robinson 28, Tyrell Robinson 24, Turner 11, Martin 3, Spates 2 (starters) F. Melifonwu 4, D. Melifonwu 2, Jones 2

#5 Cathedral Catholic edges rival #9 Torrey Pines in final minute

In the most entertaining game of the evening, junior forward Nick Prunty hit a three-pointer with 16.7 seconds left to lift fifth-ranked Cathedral Catholic to a 53-51 victory over ninth-ranked host Torrey Pines. The meeting between the Del Mar Heights Road neighbors was the first since the 2006-07 season.

“I was coming off a screen on that play and they played good defense,” Prunty said. “Luckily for us the defender kind of slipped, so I just took the opportunity and pulled up for a three.”

After Prunty made one of two free throws to put Cathedral Catholic (12-0) ahead with 3.7 seconds left, Torrey Pines (7-3) had one last chance to win the game. Falcons senior guard Garrett Galvin threw up a desperation three-pointer from 30 feet that hit the rim as time expired to keep the Dons undefeated.

“Torrey Pines is a great team and we knew we had to play a great game to beat them,” Prunty said. “We’re just glad that we were able to execute and come out with the win.”

Junior forward Xavier Williams led Cathedral Catholic with 13 points, and six Dons finished with at least six points. Galvin scored a game-high 29 points for Torrey Pines and senior guard Joe Rahon added 12 – but shot only 2-for-10 from the free throw line.

Cathedral Catholic hosts Brea Olinda (7-2) in the Senators Division first round tomorrow at 2:15 p.m. Torrey Pines hosts Compton Dominguez (3-6) tomorrow at 2:45 p.m. in the National Division.

Top-ranked LCC cruises past Poway without injured Shrigley

Minus star forward Matt Shrigley, top-ranked La Costa Canyon showcased its depth against Poway in the opening game of the tournament. The Mavericks started fast and made nine three-pointers to roll past the Titans 59-39.

“Everybody knew their role and that we had to be aggressive,” said La Costa Canyon guard David Travers. “We just came out and we shot the ball really well from the start.”

La Costa Canyon (10-1) started the game with a 13-2 run and had a 17-point lead over Poway (7-4) at halftime due in large part to strong outside shooting. Travers scored a game-high 22 points for the Mavericks and junior guard Jeff Van Dyke added 17 points – including four three-pointers.

“Jeff has been shooting the ball well for us all season long. I talked to him today before practice and told him he had to be ready to come out and score 20,” Travers said. “He came off all the screens ready to shoot and he knocked them down.”

La Costa Canyon is currently the top-ranked team in the section and ranked 25th in the state by MaxPreps, only losing to Woodland Hills Taft in the finals of the Mission Prep Christmas Classic. The Mavericks host Folsom (5-4) in the American Division first round tomorrow at 7:30 p.m. and may once again be without Shrigley, who is day-to-day with an ankle injury.

“It’s good right now but we have a lot of work to do,” Travers said. “We’re trying to win a CIF championship and we went Division II so we’re trying to win a state championship too.”

Senior center Sam Beeler led Poway with 11 points. The Titans face Punahou (Hawaii) (10-0) tomorrow at 11:05 a.m. in the Governors Division at Westview High.

La Costa Canyon – 59 (15-19-11-14)

Travers 22, Van Dyke 17, Beery 4, Sachrison 4, Lea 3 (starters) Miller 4, Arquilla 3, Magnuson 2

Poway – 39 (7-10-13-9)
