La Bruja

Halloween is still two months away, but the stores are already stocking racks of candy. It is time to get into the Halloween spirit. La Bruja (the witch) is a folk song from the Mexican state of Veracruz. Salma Hayak sang it in "Frida", the movie she produced and starred in. The lyrics are somewhat macabre, but no more so than a lot of Mother Goose Fairy Tales. Fulano translated them into English.

Ay que bonito es volar - Oh, how lovely to fly

A las dos de la mañana - At two o'clock in the morning

A las dos de la mañana - At two o'clock in the morning

Y ay que bonito es volar, ay mama - Oh, how lovely to fly, oh mother

Volar y dejarse caer - To fly and let yourself fall

En los brazos de tu hermana - Into your sister's arms

En los brazos de tu hermana - Into your sister's arms

Y hasta quisiera llorar - And until I feel like weeping

Me agarra la bruja, - The witch grabs me,

Me lleva al cuartel, - Takes me to her home,

Me vuelve maceta, - Turns me into a flowerpot,

Me da de comer - She feeds me

Me agarra la bruja, - The witch grabs me,

Me lleva al cerrito, - She takes me to the hill,

Me sienta en sus piernas, - She sits me on her lap,

Me da de besitos. - She smothers me with kisses.

Ay dígame, ay dígame, ay dígame usted! - Oh tell me, oh tell me, oh you tell me!

¿Cuantas criaturitas se ha chupado usted? - How many children have you sucked the life out of?

Ninguna, ninguna, ninguna ¿no ve? - None, none, none. Can't you see?

Que ando en pretensiones de chuparme a usted! - It is you who I intend to suck the life out of!

Y ahora sí maldita bruja - And now evil witch

Ya te chupastes a mi hijo - You've already sucked the life from my son

Ya te chupastes a mi hijo - You've already sucked the life from my son

Y ahora sí maldita bruja - And now evil witch

Y ahora le vas a chupar - And now you're going to suck the life

Y a tu marido el ombligo - From your husband's navel

Y a tu marido el ombligo - From your husband's navel

Y ahora le vas a chupar - And now you're going to suck the life

Me agarra la bruja, - The witch grabs me,

Me lleva a su casa, - Takes me to her home,

Me vuelve maceta, - Turns me into a flowerpot,

Y una calabasa - And a pumpkin.

Me agarra la bruja, - The witch grabs me,

Me lleve al cerrito, - She takes me to the hill,

Me sienta en sus piernas, - She sits me on her lap,

Me da de besitos. - She smothers me with kisses.

Ay dígame, ay dígame, ay dígame usted! - Oh tell me, oh tell me, oh you tell me!
