Teresa Laggner, a probate court trustee, pleaded guilty today (Feb. 18) to looting trust accounts and gambling the money at Barona Casino. She was a trustee for many probate court and private trusts in San Diego from 2006 into this year; she was required to use trust property only for the benefit of the trust beneficiaries. But last year and this year, she stole her clients' trust fund accounts by transferring the money to her personal and business bank accounts. The money wound up at Barona and she lost more than $1 million gambling there. The U.S. Attorney's office handled the prosecution.
Also in U.S. district court today, four defendants were sentenced for their roles in a $55 million mortgage fraud. Jonathan Garcia got 18 months in custody; Maria Echeverria, Ivan Gil, and Laneka Chatton got one year. Between 2004 and 2007, they made false statements in loan applications, raking in more than $1 million in fees.
