Coronado attorney Craig Shaber on Thursday (Oct. 21) pleaded guilty to tax evasion in 2000. According to the indictment and related documents, between 1999 and 2002, Shaber and accountant Steven Wright fraudulently acquired numerous shell companies, installed nominee officers, and filed false documents to such groups as the Securities and Exchange Commission. Then Shaber and Wright, who last year pleaded guilty to tax evasion, evaded taxes on the millions of dollars earned from the sale of the shell companies (which are empty companies used for financial manipulations, such as going public without having to reveal information required in an initial public offering.) The cases are being probed by Internal Revenue Service criminal investigators.
