More veterans of the Orange County Register are taking significant management posts at the Union-Tribune under Jeff Light, a Register alum who was named editor earlier this year. Some of the Register alums are taking jobs as so-called "topic leaders," who get a piece of copy online. Then a print "topic leader" prepares the same copy for the print edition. Diana McCabe, formerly of the Register, will be an online topic leader for such areas as money, residential and commercial real estate, energy, tech, economics, small business and tourism. Ricky Young, a Register vet who was at the U-T when Light arrived, will be topic leader in investigations. Kathy Snapp, a former co-metro editor, will be business editor on the print side. Jim Watters, former business editor, will be online topic leader for defense, environment, and science. As previously reported, staffers apply for jobs with topic leaders. It is expected that many will be laid off. The layoffs could swell as more managers are recruited from outside.
